The book is devoted to the questions of the long-time behavior of solutions for evolution equations, connected with kinetic models in statistical physics. There is a wide variety of problems where such models are used to obtain reasonable physical as well as numerical results (Fluid Mechanics, Gas Dynamics, Plasma Physics, Nuclear Physics, Turbulence Theory etc.). The classical examples provide the nonlinear Boltzmann equation. Investigation of the long-time behavior of the solutions for the Boltzmann equation gives an approach to the nonlinear fluid dynamic equations. From the viewpoint of dynamical systems, the fluid dynamic equations arise in the theory as a tool to describe an attractor of the kinetic equation.

This monograph provides a comprehensive overview on a class of nonlinear evolution equations, such as nonlinear Schrödinger equations, nonlinear Klein-Gordon equations, KdV equations as well as Navier-Stokes equations and Boltzmann equations. The global wellposedness to the Cauchy problem for those equations is systematically studied by using the harmonic analysis methods. This book is self-contained and may also be used as an advanced textbook by graduate students in analysis and PDE subjects and even ambitious undergraduate students.

A nonlinear Markov evolution is a dynamical system generated by a measure-valued ordinary differential equation with the specific feature of preserving positivity. This feature distinguishes it from general vector-valued differential equations and yields a natural link with probability, both in interpreting results and in the tools of analysis. This brilliant book, the first devoted to the area, develops this interplay between probability and analysis. After systematically presenting both analytic and probabilistic techniques, the author uses probability to obtain deeper insight into nonlinear dynamics, and analysis to tackle difficult problems in the description of random and chaotic behavior. The book addresses the most fundamental questions in the theory of nonlinear Markov processes: existence, uniqueness, constructions, approximation schemes, regularity, law of large numbers and probabilistic interpretations. Its careful exposition makes the book accessible to researchers and graduate students in stochastic and functional analysis with applications to mathematical physics and systems biology.

Annotation Ito (North Carolina State U.) and Kappel (U. of Graz, Austria) offer a unified presentation of the general approach for well-posedness results using abstract evolution equations, drawing from and modifying the work of K. and Y. Kobayashi and S. Oharu. They also explore abstract approximation results for evolution equations. Their work is not a textbook, but they explain how instructors can use various sections, or combinations of them, as a foundation for a range of courses. This book deals with analytic problems related to some developments and generalizations of the Boltzmann equation toward the modeling and qualitative analysis of large systems that are of interest in applied sciences. These generalizations are documented in the various surveys edited by Bellomo and Pulvirenti with reference to models of granular media, traffic flow, mathematical biology, communication networks, and coagulation models. The first generalization dealt with refers to the averaged Boltzmann equation, which is obtained by suitable averaging of the distribution function of the field particles into the action domain of the test particle. This model is further developed to describe equations with dissipative collisions and a class of models that are of interest in mathematical biology. In this latter case the state of the particles is defined not only by a mechanical variable but also by a biological microscopic state.

This is a collection of papers dedicated to Prof T C Woo to mark his 70th birthday. The papers focus on recent advances in elasticity, viscoelasticity and inelasticity, which are related to Prof Woo's work. Prof Woo's recent work concentrates on the viscoelastic and viscoplastic response of metals and plastics when thermal effects are significant, and the papers here address open questions in these and related areas.

This volume collects the articles presented at the Third International Conference on ?The Navier-Stokes Equations: Theory and Numerical Methods?, held in Oberwolfach, Germany. The articles are important contributions to a wide variety of topics in the Navier-Stokes theory: general boundary conditions, flow exterior to an obstacle, conical boundary points, the controllability of solutions, compressible flow, non-Newtonian flow, magneto-hydrodynamics, thermal convection, the interaction of fluids with elastic solids, the regularity of solutions, and Rothe's method of approximation.
