This is a reprinted edition of a work that was considered the definitive account in the subject area upon its initial publication by J. Wiley & Sons in 1987. It presents, within a wider context, a comprehensive account of noncommutative Noetherian rings. The author covers the major developments from the 1950s, stemming from Goldie's theorem and onward, including applications to group rings, enveloping algebras of Lie algebras, PI rings, differential operators, and localization theory. The book is not restricted to Noetherian rings, but discusses wider classes of rings where the methods apply more generally. In the current edition, some errors were corrected, a number of arguments have been expanded, and the references were brought up to date. This reprinted edition will continue to be a valuable and stimulating work for readers interested in ring theory and its applications to other areas of mathematics.

Aimed at the novice rather than the connoisseur and stressing the role of examples and motivation, this text is suitable not only for use in a graduate course, but also for self-study in the subject by interested graduate students. More than 400 exercises testing the understanding of the general theory in the text are included in this new edition.

This volume contains the proceedings of the International Conference on Groups, Rings, Group Rings, and Hopf Algebras, held October 2–4, 2015 at Loyola University, Chicago, IL, and the AMS Special Session on Groups, Rings, Group Rings, and Hopf Algebras, held October 3–4, 2015, at Loyola University, Chicago, IL. Both conferences were held in honor of Donald S. Passman's 75th Birthday. Centered in the area of group rings and algebras, this volume contains a mixture of cutting edge research topics in group theory, ring theory, algebras and their representations, Hopf algebras and quantum groups.

Let FG be the group ring of a group G over a field F. Write U(FG) for the group of units of FG. It is an important problem to determine the conditions under which U(FG) satisfies a group identity. In the mid 1990s, a conjecture of Hartley was verified, namely, if U(FG) satisfies a group identity, and G is torsion, then FG satisfies a polynomial identity. Necessary and sufficient conditions for U(FG) to satisfy a group identity soon followed. Since the late 1990s, many papers have been devoted to the study of the symmetric units; that is, those units u satisfying u* = u, where * is the involution on FG defined by sending each element of G to its inverse. The conditions under which these symmetric units satisfy a group identity have now been determined. This book presents these results for arbitrary group identities, as well as the conditions under which the unit group or the set of symmetric units satisfies several particular group identities of interest.

This book is aimed at presenting different methods and perspectives in the theory of Quantum Groups, bridging between the algebraic, representation theoretic, analytic, and differential-geometric approaches. It also covers recent developments in Noncommutative Geometry, which have close relations to quantization and quantum group symmetries. The volume collects surveys by experts which originate from an acitvity at the Max-Planck-Institute for Mathematics in Bonn.
