NOL's Hypersonic Tunnel No. 4 is a continuous blow-down hypersonic tunnel designed for research and development testing of models, instrumentation, and wind tunnel components. It can operate at Mach numbers from 5 to 10 with supply pressures up to 52 atmospheres and supply temperatures up to 1700 R. This report summarizes the pertinent aerodynamic design criteria and operating experience compiled during its first eleven years of operation. Included are descriptions of the major components and their performance along with the flight simulation capability of the facility and a bibliography of previously published reports. (Author).

Volume VIII of the High Speed Aerodynamics and Jet Propulsion series. This volume includes: performance calculation at high speed; stability and control of high speed aircraft; aeroelasticity and flutter; model testing; transonic wind tunnels; supersonic tunnels; hypersonic experimental facilities; low density wind tunnels; shock tube; wind tunnel measurements; instrumented models in free flight; piloted aircraft testing; free flight range methods. Originally published in 1961. The Princeton Legacy Library uses the latest print-on-demand technology to again make available previously out-of-print books from the distinguished backlist of Princeton University Press. These editions preserve the original texts of these important books while presenting them in durable paperback and hardcover editions. The goal of the Princeton Legacy Library is to vastly increase access to the rich scholarly heritage found in the thousands of books published by Princeton University Press since its founding in 1905.

Comparisons are made between a theory for calculating stresses about rectangular cutouts in circular cylinders of semimonocoque construction published in NACA TN 3200 and previously published NACA experimental data. The comparisons include stresses in the stringers and shear stresses in the center of the shear panels in the neighborhood of the cutout. The theory takes into account the bending flexibility of the rings in the structure, and this factor is found to be important in the calculation of stresses about cutouts. In general, when the ring flexibility is considered, good agreement is exhibited between the calculated and experimental results.
