The Noggle Stones epic continues with The Tragic Empire! Turn of the Century America Turned Upside-down by Goblins, Ogres, and War! When the peaceful town of Willow Prairie became the center of a crisis that merged the world of humanity with the world of legend, they looked to Martin Manchester to become the king that would lead them to victory and peace. Now as war breaks out between the Aes dana Empire and the United States of America, Manchester once again finds himself thrust into the role of peacemaker. With his fierce warrior bride, Maga, and feral ward, Riley Ratcatcher, Manchester mounts an expedition to Washington, D.C., hoping to defuse the conflict before more innocent blood is spilled. Yet even as the King sets out on this perilous journey, his mad goblin advisor, Bugbear, begins to unravel the twisted and hidden history of an enemy so dark and evil that even the great Dragons of old succumbed to its subtle and treacherous might!"

Unfelt offers a new account of feeling during the British Enlightenment, finding that the passions and sentiments long considered as preoccupations of the era depend on a potent insensibility, the secret emergence of pronounced emotions that only become apparent with time. Surveying a range of affects including primary sensation, love and self-love, greed, happiness, and patriotic ardor, James Noggle explores literary evocations of imperceptibility and unfeeling that pervade and support the period's understanding of sensibility. Each of the four sections of Unfelt—on philosophy, the novel, historiography, and political economy—charts the development of these idioms from early in the long eighteenth century to their culmination in the age of sensibility. From Locke to Eliza Haywood, Henry Fielding, and Frances Burney, and from Dudley North to Hume and Adam Smith, Noggle's exploration of the insensible dramatically expands the scope of affect in the period's writing and thought. Drawing inspiration from contemporary affect theory, Noggle charts how feeling and unfeeling flow and feed back into each other, identifying emotional dynamics at their most elusive and powerful: the potential, the incipient, the emergent, the virtual.

This diverse and compelling collection of contemporary feminist visual art is now available in a paperback edition. Reframings makes visible what has been for too long nearly invisible: contemporary feminist visual art that represents a remarkable range of perspectives, styles, and subject matter. The forty-five women who created these works-artists and writers such as Deborah Willis, Carrie Mae Weems, Nan Goldin, and Carm Little Turtle-are connected by a belief that images are political and that today's feminist concerns cannot be separated from such issues as ethnicity, class, age, and sexuality. They share a consciousness that historically women have been "framed" and can now be "reframed." Becoming someone is a learning process; and what we learn is the new values around which, if we succeed, our lives will come to turn. Agents transform themselves in the process of, for example, becoming parents, embarking on careers, or acquiring a passion for music or politics. How can such activity be rational, if the reason for engaging in the relevant pursuit is only available to the person one will become? How is it psychologically possible to feel the attraction of a form of concern that is not yet one's own? How can the work done to arrive at the finish line be ascribed to one who doesn't (really) know what one is doing, or why one is doing it? In Aspiration, Agnes Callard asserts that these questions belong to the theory of aspiration. Aspirants are motivated by proleptic reasons, acknowledged defective versions of the reasons they expect to eventually grasp. The psychology of such a transformation is marked by intrinsic conflict between their old point of view on value and the one they are trying to acquire. They cannot adjudicate this conflict by deliberating or choosing or deciding-rather, they resolve it by working to see the world in a new way. This work has a teleological structure: by modeling oneself on the person he or she is trying to be, the aspirant brings that person into being. Because it is open to us to engage in an activity of self-creation, we are responsible for having become the kinds of people we are.
