In recent years, there has been an increased engagement throughout the social sciences with the study of extreme places and practices. Dangerous games and adventure tours have shifted from being marginal, exotic or mad to being more than merely acceptable. They are now exemplary, mainstream even: there are a variety of new types, increasing numbers of people are doing them and they are being appropriated and have infiltrated more and more contexts. This book argues that hazardous sports and adventure tourism have become rather paradoxical. As a set of activities where players and holidaymakers are closer to death or danger than they would otherwise be, they are the complete opposite of normal games or vacations. Adventure sports and tours reverse the general definition of a holiday as being an escape from the seriousness of everyday life, as in most cases, they are innately serious, requiring as they do 'life or death' decision-making. Beginning with the rise in colonial explorations and moving on to consider the Dangerous Sports Club of Oxford, this book examines the increasing phenomena of adventure sports such as bungy jumping, cliff jumping or 'tomb-stoning', surfing and parkour within a framework of positive risk. It explores how certain assumptions about knowledge, agency, the body and nature are beginning to coalesce around newly developing spheres of social relations. Additionally, extreme games have become activities that are germane to the dawning of green social thought and so the book also addresses issues that deal with the intimate connections that exist between pleasure and the moral responsibility towards the environment.

From Jeff VanderMeer, the author of Borne and Annihilation, comes the paperback reissue of his cult classic City of Saints and Madmen. In this reinvention of the literature of the fantastic, you hold in your hands an invitation to a place unlike any you’ve ever visited—an invitation delivered by one of our most audacious and astonishing literary magicians. City of elegance and squalor. Of religious fervor and wanton lusts. And everywhere, on the walls of courtyards and churches, an incandescent fungus of mysterious and ominous origin. In Ambergris, a would-be suitor discovers that a sunlit street can become a killing ground in the blink of an eye. An artist receives an invitation to a beheading—and finds himself enchanted. And a patient in a mental institution is convinced that he’s made up a city called Ambergris, imagined its every last detail, and that he’s really from a place called Chicago . . . By turns sensuous and terrifying, filled with exotica and eroticism, this interwoven collection of stories, histories, and “eyewitness” reports invokes a universe within a puzzle box where you can lose—and find—yourself again.

A San Francisco family copes with a teenage son’s mental illness in “a wonderful book, with characters that bounce off the page” (Elizabeth Strout). Named a Best Book of the Year by Newsday and the San Francisco Chronicle In this “profound, heart-wrenching, and resonant” Lambda Award–winning novel, a quintessentially modern family is transformed by the mental breakdown of their adolescent son (Francisco Goldman). When Christopher disappears from his San Francisco home, his extended family comes together in a frantic search. But the sixteen-year-old is in much more trouble than they know, and their attempts to both support and save him will challenge their assumptions about themselves and one another. In “unflinching prose that’s both descriptive and soulful,” Stacey D’Erasmo explores the ways in which love moves us to actions that have both redemptive and disastrous consequences—sometimes in the same heartbeat (Time Out New York). “Open A Seahorse Year and be mesmerized,” raved the Advocate of this exquisitely crafted novel that is “both deeply satisfying and quietly subversive” (The New York Times Book Review). A winner of the Ferro-Grumley Award for Fiction and other honors, A Seahorse Year is “a stunning achievement” (Suzan Sherman). “[D’Erasmo] writes with a graceful, sometimes devastating directness, in clear, crisp phrases lined with subtle lyricism.” —The Boston Globe “Alternating perspectives and controlled, nuanced writing bring depth and compassion to each character . . . [and] make D’Erasmo an author to watch.” —Library Journal “After turning a page or two of A Seahorse Year you’ll know you’re into something special.” —Out magazine

Genre: Literary Collections
ISBN: 1583949925

Io Anthology celebrates the fiftieth anniversary of this formative journal and commemorates its role in clearing a path for decades of innovative publishing. Bringing together in one volume the quirky blend of artistic and scholarly writing that pushed the boundaries of what the "literary mag" encompassed, this book is a greatest hits collection of the major pieces published from 1965 to 1978. It features very early work from Stephen King, Allen Ginsberg, Michel Foucault, and many others, with forewords by writer and filmmaker Miranda July and scientist Robin Grossinger. In its twelve years of publishing, Io forged an inclusive path through the tsunami of the 1960s rebellion in art, literature, and the life of the spirit with writing that embraced science and science fiction, parapsychology, poetry from Pound to Charles Olson to the New American Poets, homeopathy, hermetics, alchemy and the occult, astrology, Tibetan Buddhism, and Sufism. Spotlighting the continuity of purpose and content between North Atlantic Books, which grew out of the magazine, this volume chronicles the voices and spirit that continue to enliven the publishing vision that persists to this day.
