Nikolay Vladislavovich Bessonov was born in 1962 in Moscow. He has a higher art education (MVHPU). Bessonov painted wonderful, romantic paintings of Roma (Gypsies). Roma in art is a different story altogether, a subject we hope to take up later. Another line of his paintings was for a book about Medieval witch persecution, with gruesome pictures of mostly beautiful women coming into trouble. The authors came into contact with Bessonov in connection with an exhibition of Roma Art and Culture in 1997 in Denmark. Please accept this little booklet for what it is and with all its limitations. We have long wanted to do it for obvious reasons as Bessonov was very talented artist and a great friend of Roma. The booklet is produced from the images we got from him in curating the exhibition. We have some more images in a box somewhere in storage, so this booklet may see a second edition.

Jekatyerina Dunajeva explores how two dominant stereotypes—“bad Gypsies” and “good Roma”—took hold in formal and informal educational institutions in Russia and Hungary. She shows that over centuries “Gypsies” came to be associated with criminality, lack of education, and backwardness. The second notion, of proud, empowered, and educated “Roma,” is a more recent development. By identifying five historical phases—pre-modern, early-modern, early and “ripe” communism, and neomodern nation-building—the book captures crucial legacies that deepen social divisions and normalize the constructed group images. The analysis of the state-managed Roma identity project in the brief korenizatsija program for the integration of non-Russian nationalities into the Soviet civil service in the 1920s is particularly revealing, while the critique of contemporary endeavors is a valuable resource for policy makers and civic activists alike. The top-down view is complemented with the bottom-up attention to everyday Roma voices. Personal stories reveal how identities operate in daily life, as Dunajeva brings out hidden narratives and subaltern discourse. Joaquín Sorolla (born in Valencia 1863 - died in Cercedilla 1923) is one of the most successful Spanish painters ever. He was a genius in capturing the essence of the scene and the soul of the person he was painting. Sorolla painted a large number of portraits, even though it is said he didn ́t like doing them. For doing something he detested he certainly did it magnificently. In this volume some of the portraits from his formative period 1863 -1888 as well as his consolidation period 1889 -1899 are presented. Joaquín Sorolla (born in Valencia 1863 - died in Cercedilla 1923) is one of the most successful Spanish painters ever. He was a genius in capturing the essence of the scene he was painting. In Joaquín Sorolla Portraits 2 1900 -1910 Sorolla becomes a celebrated portrait painter. Following the success of his one man exhibitions in France 1906, to a lesser degree Germany 1907, England 1908 but especially the USA 1909 portrait commissions flooded in. But even before Paris Sorolla produced a large number of portraits. Many of his most important sitters were male, but Sorolla did exquisite female portraits as well. This book shows the 10 Famous Views Of Naniwa (Osaka) by Hiroshige published in 1834. They are unusual in that they show markets with merchants negotiating. The 8 Views is a Chinese artistic and literary theme developed already in the 10th century and then transposed into Japanese culture, where it developed its own independent expression. Print artist Utagawa Hiroshige as many other Japanese artists took up the issue of 8 Views of Omi and again as other Japanese artists he expanded the theme into 8 Views of Kanazawa, 8 Views of Edo Environs and other locations. To give some background there are many other prints included especially about rice but also fishing and transportation, and cultural activities afforded by the wealth accumulated by the merchants. It is possible to travel to see the same sites today.

Icon and Devotion offers the first extensive presentation in English of the making and meaning of Russian icons. The craft of icon-making is set into the context of forms of worship that emerged in the Russian Orthodox Church in the mid-seventeenth century. Oleg Tarasov shows how icons have held a special place in Russian consciousness because they represented idealized images of Holy Russia. He also looks closely at how and why icons were made. Wonder-working saints and the leaders of such religious schisms as the Old Believers appear in these pages, which are illustrated in halftones with miniature paintings, lithographs and engravings never before published in the English-speaking world. The Scenic Places of the Tokaido (Tokaido Meisho no Uchi) by 17 artists is based on the list of prints on the Kunisada Project website run by Dr Horst Graebner with a total of 162 ukiyo-e prints. It is a fantastic work, an effort presumably directed by the shogun ́s political office to commemorate his attempt to preserve a joint rulership with the emperor over Japan. It differs from the many other Tokaido series by the large number of prints, at least three times as many in a series. If differs by the number of people in the prints - the procession consisted of 3,000 people. It also marks the end of the ukiyo-e Tokaido, where the forced travel of the daimyo - sankin-kotai - had contributed so much to the economic and cultural development along these roads and indeed to the whole print making industry. The shogun abolished sankin-kotai in 1862.
