Major Percy Alexander MacMahon is one of the nineteenth century's forgotten mathematical heroes. Mathematicians know him for his classic work Combinatory Analysis, a book still in print. He also published four papers on recreational topics. New Mathematical Pastimes develops some of these ideas. It has had a widespread and persistent influence but is still unknown to many recreational mathematicians and the puzzle community. The book is hard to come by and so it seems fitting to produce a reprint to celebrate the 150th anniversary of his birth. MacMahon set out to demonstrate the principles by which an interested reader, with some work and thought, could create his or her own amusements. It also contained a completely original approach to visual puzzles, where edge matching could be forced by altering the profiles of the edges, a process described in Part II of the book. The results of these transformations are remarkably similar to work produced by Maurits Escher, and predate him by a decade and a half. As well as being important as a resource the subject is by no means exhausted. A worthwhile and important addition to any collection - in book and CD form (CD with much original, additional material).

Mathematical Games and Pastimes focuses on numerical solutions to mathematical games and pastimes. The book first discusses the binary system of notation and the system of notation with the base three. Congruences, Pythagorean and Heronic triples, and arithmetical pastimes are explained. The text takes a look at the nature of numerical tricks. Guessing the results of operations with unknown numbers; determination of numbers thought of using three tables; and extraction of roots of multidigit numbers are explained. The selection also touches on rapid calculations, games with piles of objects, M.

Martin Gardner's Mathematical Games columns in Scientific American inspired and entertained several generations of mathematicians and scientists. Gardner in his crystal-clear prose illuminated corners of mathematics, especially recreational mathematics, that most people had no idea existed. His playful spirit and inquisitive nature invite the reader into an exploration of beautiful mathematical ideas along with him. These columns were both a revelation and a gift when he wrote them; no one--before Gardner--had written about mathematics like this. They continue to be a marvel. This volume, first published in 1966, contains columns originally published from 1959-1961. This is the 1995 MAA edition and contains an extensive postscript and bibliography from Gardner updating the columns.

The text takes a look at the nature of numerical tricks. The selection also touches on rapid calculations, games with piles of objects, Meleda, solitaire, and Lucas' game. Problems on determining ways to reach goals are also presented. Games that show the numerous ways to reach goals are discussed. The text also examines Euler squares, dominoes, and problems related to the chess board. Pastimes related to objects changing places are also highlighted. Topics include Lucas' problem, Ruma, and Monge's shuffle. The book is highly recommended for readers wanting to find solutions to mathematical games and pastimes.

Knots are familiar objects. Yet the mathematical theory of knots quickly leads to deep results in topology and geometry. This work offers an introduction to this theory, starting with our understanding of knots. It presents the applications of knot theory to modern chemistry, biology and physics.

Ranging from ancient Greek and Roman problems to the most modern applications of special mathematical techniques for amusement, this popular volume contains material to delight both beginners and advanced mathematicians. Its 250 lively puzzles, problems, situations, and demonstrations of recreational mathematics feature full solutions and analyses. Fifty-seven highly unusual historic problems are derived from ancient Greek, medieval European, Arabic, and Hindu sources. Other problems are based on "mathematics without numbers," geometry, topology, the calendar, arithmetic, and the mathematics of chess moves. Fifty pages comprise numerical pastimes built out of figurate numbers, Mersenne numbers, Fermat numbers, cyclic numbers, automorphic numbers, and prime numbers; probability problems are also fully analyzed. More than forty pages are devoted to magic squares, and the concluding portion of the book presents more than twenty-five new positional and permutational games of permanent value. A discussion of fairy chess is followed by rules and procedural information on latruncles, go, reversi, jinx, ruma, lasca, tricolor, four-story towers, tetrachrome, and other games. More than a collection of wonderful puzzles, this volume offers a thorough, rigorous, and entertaining sampler of recreational mathematics, highlighted by numerous insights into specialized fields.
