The First International Conference on the New Diamond Science and Technol. is used to assess the current (1989) status of diamond S and T in Japan. The 106 papers and poster that were presented at this conf. are briefly described. The current status of the diamond S and T is then discussed by considering: the theory for diamond film (DF) formation, structures of DF, processing conditions for the fabrication of DF, applications for diamond and diamond-like films, synthetic diamond crystals, and cubic boron nitride. The first applications of DF will use properties such as hardness and thermal conductivity to be used on a limited number of cutting tool substrates. Other applications for DF, as well as cubic boron nitride films, will be forthcoming.
