Optical Metrology for Fluids, Combustion and Solids is the first practical handbook that presents the assemblage of the techniques necessary to provide a basic understanding of optical measurement for fluids, combustion, and solids. The use of light as a measurement tool has grown over the past twenty years from a narrowly specialized activity to a mainstay of modern research today. Until recently, the knowledge that could be extracted from the light interaction of light with physical objects was limited to specialized activities. The invention of the laser, the computer and microelectronics has enabled a measurement revolution such that virtually every parameter of engineering interest can be measured using the minimally intrusive properties of light. The authors of this book's chapters are leaders in this revolution. They work on the front lines of research in government, industry, and universities, inventing yet more ways to harness the power of light for the generation of knowledge.

A neural-net inspection process has been combined with a bootstrap training procedure and electronic holography to detect changes or damage in a pressure-cycled International Space Station cold plate to be used for cooling instrumentation. The cold plate was excited to vibrate in a normal mode at low amplitude, and the neural net was trained by example to flag small changes in the mode shape. The NDE (nondestructive-evaluation) technique is straightforward but in its infancy; its applications are ad-hoc and uncalibrated. Nevertheless previous research has shown that the neural net can detect displacement changes to better than 1/100 the maximum displacement amplitude. Development efforts that support the NDE technique are mentioned briefly, followed by descriptions of electronic holography and neural-net processing. The bootstrap training procedure and its application to detection of damage in a pressure-cycled cold plate are discussed. Suggestions for calibrating and quantifying the NDE procedure are presented. Integrated Vehicle Health Management (IVHM) is a relatively new subject, with its roots back in the space sector of the early 1990s. Although many of the papers written around that time did not refer to it as IVHM, the fundamental principles of considering an integrated end-to-end system to monitor the overall health of the asset were clearly visible. As the subject of Integrated Vehicle Health Management (IVHM) and its associated technologies have grown up, businesses are making the transformation from selling a product to selling a service. This can be viewed as a positive disruption, as a relatively small technology breakthrough is being brought to market for a large business benefit. The sequence “sense—acquire—transfer—analyze—act “ feeds the information (processed data) on the asset’s health into the Operations or Management control center. Here, decisions can be made on maintenance actions with knowledge of the supply chain status, MRO loading, etc., provided by Maintenance and Logistics systems. Undoubtedly, a much more efficient and economical modus operandi. This book brings together a collection of twenty –two SAE International Technical papers on this very theme, organized according to specific areas of interest: • Engines • Airframes • Electrical Power Systems • Supporting Systems • Architecture They were selected by Dr. Ian K. Jennions, Director of IVHM Center at Cranfield University, in the UK. Dr. Jennions was also the editor of three other books on Integrated Vehicle Health Management, published by SAE International: • IVHM: Perspectives on an Emerging Field • IVHM: Business Case Theory and Practice • IVHM: The Technology

This book provides comprehensive coverage of neural networks, their evolution, their structure, the problems they can solve, and their applications. The first half of the book looks at theoretical investigations on artificial neural networks and addresses the key architectures that are capable of implementation in various application scenarios. The second half is designed specifically for the production of solutions using artificial neural networks to solve practical problems arising from different areas of knowledge. It also describes the various implementation details that were taken into account to achieve the reported results. These aspects contribute to the maturation and improvement of experimental techniques to specify the neural network architecture that is most appropriate for a particular application scope. The book is appropriate for students in graduate and upper undergraduate courses in addition to researchers and professionals.
