This workshop followed the First International Conference, which was hosted by Fermilab, on 26-28 October, 1994. That conference discussed the switch type event builder. Much intensive R&D work ensued from it, showing the importance of (1) data flow control and (2) high speed memory access on network adapters/drivers. Those two themes are involved in many networked data acquisition systems. Therefore, “Networked Data Acquisition Systems” was selected as the theme of DAQ 96. It includes a wide variety of data acquisition system presentations from present and near-future experiments at high energy and nuclear physics laboratories.

The Network Designer's Handbook will help anyone trapped between limited bandwidth, fault-intolerant computer buses and expensive, over-engineered telecommunications technology. It will help anyone looking for new cost-effective ways to build LAN switches, RAID systems, multimedia servers or multiprocessors. It will help the small company looking for an edge to break into the market, and the large one looking for ways to improve its margins and boost its market share. This handbook, the result of over six man-years of effort at the PACT Research Institute, provides solid engineering data for the computer systems professional. Four cpu-months of system simulation are summarised in an easy-to-read form, allowing the consequences of different design decisions to be simply compared. The Network Designer's Handbook explains the principles of the new generation of small-scale low-buffer serial interconnects. Using the specific example of IEEE 1355-1995 links and the STC104 high-valency switch chip it shows how this technology can provide modular, fault-tolerant and scalable interconnect. The picture is rounded out with descriptions of network topologies, case studies and many practical tips.

From simple thermistors to intelligent silicon microdevices with powerful capabilities to communicate information across networks, sensors play an important role in such diverse fields as biomedical and chemical engineering to wireless communications. Introducing a new dependent count method for frequency signal processing, this book presents a practical approach to the design of signal processing sensors. Modern advanced microsensors technologies require new and equally advanced methods of frequency signal processing in order to function at inreasingly high speeds. The authors provide a comprehensive overview of data acquisition and signal processing methods for the new generation of smart and quasi-smart sensors. The practical approach of the text includes coverage of the design of signal processing methods for digital, frequency, period, duty-cycle and time interval sensors. * Contains numerous practical examples illustrating the design of unique signal processing sensors and transducers * Details traditional, novel, and state of the art methods for frequency signal processing * Coverage of the physical characteristics of smart sensors, development methods and applications potential * Outlines the concept, principles and nature of the method of dependent count (MDC) ; a unique method for frequency signal processing, developed by the authors This text is a leading edge resource for measurement engineers, researchers and developers working in microsensors, MEMS and microsystems, as well as advanced undergraduates and graduates in electrical and mechanical engineering.

This book is organized around the various sensing techniques used to achieve structural health monitoring. Its main focus is on sensors, signal and data reduction methods and inverse techniques, which enable the identification of the physical parameters, affected by the presence of the damage, on which a diagnostic is established. Structural Health Monitoring is not oriented by the type of applications or linked to special classes of problems, but rather presents broader families of techniques: vibration and modal analysis; optical fibre sensing; acousto-ultrasonics, using piezoelectric transducers; and electric and electromagnetic techniques. Each chapter has been written by specialists in the subject area who possess a broad range of practical experience. The book will be accessible to students and those new to the field, but the exhaustive overview of present research and development, as well as the numerous references provided, also make it required reading for experienced researchers and engineers.
