Excerpt from Nests and Eggs of Familiar British Birds, Described and Illustrated: With an Account of the Haunts and Habits of the Feathered Architects, and Their Times and Modes of Building Ir may at first strike our young readers that this is a question very easily answered; if they think so, let them try What sort of an answer they can give to it, and if they break down in the definition, we will endeavour to help them, as we are told in the old fable, Jupiter did the waggoner; but it is best for young people to try, and, for that matter, old people too; let them never believe that they can't do a thing - where there's a will there's a way. Many a boy that will take a deal of pains, and incur no inconsiderable risk of life and limb, to climb up a tree after a bird's nest, finds it too much trouble to read and learn about the habits of the creature he is thus ready to deprive of its warm comfortable home and beautiful eggs. He cannot tell you, if you ask him, of What the nest is composed, nor how, nor when it was built, much less can he answer the question which we have just put to our readers. Excerpt from Birds and Their Nests The birds in these pictures of ours have all nests, which is as it should be; for how could the bird rear its young without its little home and soft little bed, any more than children could be comfortably brought up without either a bed to lie upon, or a home in which to be happy. Excerpt from Nests and Eggs of American Birds Loosely built, some of the eel-grass hanging down at least ten inches below the rim of the nest. The inner lining was made in the common way, of the usual grasses. One of the nests which he obtained had a few dead leaves in its 'base. Finally, the collection of Dr. Wm. Wood, of Connecticut, contains three robins' nests, all built during the same season, within the same tobacco-shed, and made wholly of bits of tobacco-twine woven inseparably together. Presumably, these three nests were made by the same pair; and Dr. Wood is reported as inclining to the opinion that two of them, at least, were made before any eggs were. Laid, since he has known of such a case. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Birds' Nests and Eggs: With Directions for Preparing, Stuffing, and Mounting Birds and Animals; With Thirteen Engravings and Diagrams, and a Coloured Illustration of the Eggs of British Pet Birds A little later, and the smaller birds make the grove sound musical, as their several songs of love are poured forth. From this time the male becomes the slave of the female. He sings to charm her; he labours incessantly to aid her; he gathers materials for the nest; he assists her in building, and super intends the workmanship; and marvellous it is to see them, without other instruments than beak and claws, build and weave or sew the nest, according to their peculiar habits. Observe the materials which they employ with so much effect, and with a discernment which indicates something approaching to intelligence. Look how skilfully one weaves the catkins of the willow, the poplar, and thistle down, surrounding it by stronger fibres, and the address with which it is suspended at the extremity of some slender pendulous branch, beyond the reach of anything that only runs or creeps. Another, having made its calcula tions, fixes its nest so near to the surface of the water, that as the wind sweeps through the four reeds to which it is so firmly and yet so delicately attached, its bottom just touches the water without being immersed, even in the most violent storm.
