Excerpt from Art and Nature Under an Italian Sky Various motives combine to make me wish to keep something like a Journal during our present tour. It is always a peculiar pleasure to me to possess a memorial of the past, especially if that past has been marked by change of scene, or the calling forth of new feelings; but to be able thereby to recall vividly those scenes and feelings, so as to share them with those who have either experienced or can sympathize with them, makes such a record more valuable still. The painful part of leaving England and our own quiet home just now. is the consequent separation from our dear child, thankful though we are that she will be most kindly and tenderly cared for. Excerpt from Nature and Art, 1867, Vol. 2 All this time, Folly was leaping her heart out after that ugly Mag., that kept on whistling with its eye cooked on the top of the great toll-board. Ninon the Wise, who well knew the di 'er between her master's whistle, and the whistle of a Brompton magpie, stood as grave as a judge inside the rails. At the minute, a cart came out of the great gate at Eagle Lodge, and my heart was in my mouth, for I saw no escape for Folly, and I could have spitted the poleescman as I would a goose, and he standing twisting a straw in his mouth. Excerpt from Nature's Laws and the Making of Pictures Perspective is the art of projecting upon a flat surface the image of any object, situated at any distance, so that it may present to the eye the same appearance with regard to its surroundings as does the real object. It is an exact science, and the truth of its rules can be demonstrated to absolute certainty so they can no more be ignored than can the multiplica tion table or the propositions of Euclid. Yet it is a fact that many artists, just because they have never taken the trouble to learn how to use these rules of perspective, abuse the whole subject call it a one-eyed science tell you that it has nothing to do with Art and even go so far as to say that, if you have to use paper and pencil to prove your case, you must be wrong. Excerpt from Precious Stones in Nature, Art, and Literature In the preparation of the work on "Precious Stones," use has been made of all the assistance within reach of the author obtained from writers expressly discoursing upon this topic, from general literature, and from works exclusively scientific. The subject covers a wide field, and is one about which, on some points, there is considerable difference of opinion; therefore, the difficulty of arriving at the truth is much greater than where there is more concurrence of views, and more agreement in the statements of what are claimed to be historical facts. Very few American works on precious stones exist, and those that have been published are generally limited in the number of species described; while nothing, or only very meagre accounts have been given to American gems by foreign authors. The most complete list of native gems is by Mr. George F. Kunz, mineralogist and gem-expert, employed by Messrs. Tiffany and Company, New York, published in the United States Geological Surveys, under the superintendence of Mr. Albert Williams, Jr. The author very gratefully acknowledges the assistance generously offered by Mr. Kunz, who examined parts of the manuscript, and suggested several improvements, more especially in the scientific and practical portions of the work. Excerpt from Nature Our age is retrospective. It builds the sepulchres of the fathers. It writes biographies, histories, and criticism. The foregoing generations beheld God and nature face to face; we, through their eyes. Why should not we also enjoy an original relation to the universe? Why should not we have a poetry and philosophy of insight and not of tradition, and a religion by revelation to us, and not the history of theirs? Embosomed for a season in nature, whose floods of life stream around and through us, and invite us by the powers they supply, to action proportioned to nature, why should we grope among the dry bones of the past, or put the living generation into masquerade out of its faded wardrobe? The sun shines to-day also. There is more wool and flax in the fields. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
