Building Education and Research explores this new active area of research in a series of papers by internationally acclaimed experts, presented at the CIB W89 International Conference on Building Education and Research held in July 1998 (BEAR `98) in Brisbane, Australia. Sponsored in collaboratio jointly by the Queensland University of Technology, the Conseil International du Batiment (CIB) and the Australian Institute of Building (AIB), the conference was organised around the theme `Building Research and Education Beyond 2000' and looks at the factors that are changing the requirements of building education and research: economic and technological concerns; environmental concerns; government policies; Industries' demands; re-evaluation of community expectations.

This book addresses the importance of human factors in optimizing the learning and training process. It reports on the latest research and best practices relating to the application of behavioral and cognitive science, and new technologies in the design of instructional and training content. It proposes innovative strategies for improving the learning and training experience and outcomes in different contexts, including lower and higher education, and different industry sectors. A special emphasis is given to digital and distance learning, gamification, and virtual training. Gathering contributions to the AHFE 2021 Conference on Human Factors in Training, Education, and Learning Sciences, held virtually on July 25-29, 2021, from USA, this book offers extensive information and a thought-provoking guide for both researchers and practitioners in the field of education and training.

Big Data in Materials Research and Development is the summary of a workshop convened by the National Research Council Standing Committee on Defense Materials Manufacturing and Infrastructure in February 2014 to discuss the impact of big data on materials and manufacturing. The materials science community would benefit from appropriate access to data and metadata for materials development, processing, application development, and application life cycles. Currently, that access does not appear to be sufficiently widespread, and many workshop participants captured the constraints and identified potential improvements to enable broader access to materials and manufacturing data and metadata. This report discusses issues in defense materials, manufacturing and infrastructure, including data ownership and access; collaboration and exploitation of big data's capabilities; and maintenance of data.

Most of the instruments now used for materials research are too complex and expensive for individual investigators to own, operate, and maintain them. Consequently, they have become increasingly consolidated into multi-user, small to midsized research facilities, located at many sites around the country. The proliferation of these facilities, however, has drawn calls for a careful assessment of best principles for their operation. With support from the Department of Energy and the National Science Foundation, the NRC carried out a study to characterize and discuss ways to optimize investments in materials research facility infrastructure with attention to midsize facilities. This report provides an assessment of the nature and importance of mid-sized facilities, their capabilities, challenges they face, current investment, and optimizing their effectiveness.
