The project is comprised of and 800 foot long, 80 foot hydraulic height, earthfill main dam, and a 18 foot hydraulic height, 1,600 foot long earthfill dike. The main dam has a 78.5 foot long concrete spillway with a 450 foot long concrete and stone outlet channel. The spillway has a capacity of 4,320 cfs (to top of dam elevation 770.5) which is approximately 73 percent of the test flood outflow. The dam and dike are generally in fair condition.

The dam consists of an earth dike, about 250 ft. long on the left bank of the river, and a z-shaped stone masonry spillway about 212 ft. long. The dam itself is generally in good condition. There was no evidence of settlement, lateral movement or other signs of structural failure. It is small in size with a high hazard potential.

Overlook Reservoir Dam is a 370 foot long, 47 foot high, earth embankment structure with a masonry core wall and a stone masonry gatehouse. There is a separate 900 foot long, 25 foot high dike with an 10 foot long concrete channel spillway, located along the northern part of the reservoir. The visual inspection indicated the dam and dike to be in generally fair condition. Heavy vegetation, animal burrows, surficial sloughing and erosion were observed on the side slopes of the dam. Excessive tree growth and seepage was observed at the dike. Leakage into the valve chamber located upstream of the chlorination building was observed and the functionability of the control valves at the facility are questionable. The test flood outflow requires only 5 percent of the spillways capacity. Therefore, neither the dam or dike would be overtopped by the test flood.

The impounding structures at Fall Brook Reservoir include a 1392-foot long, 37-foot high main dam with a spillway and outlet, and a 256-foot long, 11-foot high dike. The spillway is located at the south abutment of the dam, and consists of a broad-crested weir 19 feet long with vertical stone masonry training walls that extend the length of the discharge channel. The outlet for the dam consists of a 30-inch diameter cast-iron pipe which discharges at the toe of th dam. The dam is generally in fair condition. The test flood outflow of 2,370 cfs and pool at El 657.6 will overtop the dam by 0.6 feet and the dike by 1.4 feet. The spillway capacity at El 646.2 (the low point on the crest of the dike) is 500 cfs, which is 21 percent of the test flood outflow.

The dam is comprised of a 705 foot long, 49 foot high, earth fill embankment, and a 31 foot wide stone spillway. The spillway has a capacity of 195 and 380 cfs with and without flashboards, which is 27 and 57 percent of the 1/2 PMF outflow, respectively. The remaining outflow overtops the spillway training walls and adjacent Ashby West Road. The top of the dam, elevation 889, is not overtopped. This dam is in generally fair condition. It is recommended that the owner engage a registered professional engineer to investigate downstream seepage conditions, to further evaluate the adequacy of the spillway, and to recommend a method of removing and properly backfilling trees stumps on the downstream face of the dam. Furthermore, the owner should institute certain remedial measures including permanent removal of spillway flashboards; repair of erosion at the upstream slopes near the gatehouse; repair of gatehouse masonry; backfilling of animal holes; maintenance of proper growth on the downstream slopes; removal of small trees, brush and debris within the spillway channel; monitoring of differential settlement within the floor of the spillway channel; and periodic testing of all intake and outlet gates to insure they are in working order.

Total length of the dam is about 800 ft. with a height of about 22 ft. Although there were some minor deficiencies noted the dam is considered to be in good condition. It is intermediate in size with a hazard potential of high.

There are two impounding structures at Fort Meadow Reservoir--an earthfill dam and an earth dike adjacent to a spillway with a concrete weir. The dam is about 320 ft. long and 30 ft. high. The dike is about 80 ft. wide and 3.5 ft. high, and the spillway is 13.3 ft. long. The dam is considered to be in generally poor condition. It also has a high hazard potential level.

The reservoir is a 65 billion gallon water supply reservoir which was constructed to serve the Metropolitan Boston area. The reservoir is impounded by a 1423 ft. long, stone masonry dam and a 10500 ft. long earthfill dike. The dike is a maximum of 22 ft. high and consists of two earthfill embankments separated by a knoll of natural land. There is no spillway at the dike. There are deficiencies which must be corrected to assure the continued performance of the facility. (Author).
