Fernwood Lake is impounded by three separate earth embankment dams believed to have been built in 1877. (There is also a 325 ft. long South Dike separating a portion of the south end of the lake; however, it has a low hazard potential and thus was excluded from inspection.) East Dam is approximately 100 ft. long and has a maximum height of 5 ft. Its 8-in diameter outlet pipe has been blocked. West Dam is approximately 400 ft. in length and a maximum of 11 ft. in height. It has a 14-in. diameter low-level outlet. The main dam at the north end of the lake is 450 ft. in length, 19 ft. in height and has a 19 ft. long spillway crest. The main Fernwood Lake (North) Dam - MA 00184 was the subject of a previous Phase I Inspection Report dated April 1979. The East and West dams are both in poor condition, based on visual examination of the structures. Hydraulic analyses indicate that the test flood outflow of 370 cfs (inflow 475 cfs or 913 csm) would overtop East Dam by 0.5 ft. and that a freeboard of 1.5 ft. would remain at West Dam. (A freeboard of 1.6 ft. would remain at North Dam and South Dike would be overtopped by 0.3 ft.) With the water level at the top of East Dam, the spillway capacity at North Dam with flashboards in place is about 80 cfs or 22 percent of the peak test flood outflow.

Fernwood Lake Dam, Gloucester, Mass., consists of an earth embankment approximately 450 feet in length and a 19 ft. long flashboard controlled spillway at the right abutment. The dam is in fair condition, based on a visual examination of the structure. Based on the 'small' size and 'high' hazard potential, the test flood for this dam is 1/2 the PMF.

The impounding structure at West Pond is a 123-foot long, 12-foot high earthfill dam with an overflow spillway at the east abutment. The spillway is located at the east abutment of the dam and consists of a notched ungated concrete weir with an overall length of 16 feet. The low point on the top of the dam is lower than the unnotched portion of the spillway. Based on the visual inspection of the site and a review of the limited data available on the dam, the dam is considered to be in poor condition and is in need of extensive repair work. The following deficiencies were observed at the site: moderate seepage below the toe of the dam; severe erosion of the upstream slope exposing the core wall; erosion of the top and downstream slope of the dam, localized buldging along the downstream slope; lack of a low level outlet; separation of the training walls from the spillway; seepage around and beneath the spillway; brush, timber, and debris in the discharge channel; and trees and vegetation growing on the slopes of the dam. The peak test flood outflow of 107 cfs will overtop the dam by a maximum of 1.3 feet. The spillway can discharge only 1.1 percent of the test flood before the dam is overtopped.

Lake Wampanoag Dam is approximately 660 feet long including the spillway and has a maximum height of approximately 22 feet. It consists of an earth embankment with riprap at the upstream face and a loamed and seeded crest and downstream face. Based on the size classification (intermediate) and hazard potential classification (high), the spillway test flood is the PMF.

The dam is an earth embarkment 1145 ft. long and 44 ft. high at the downstream toe with a drop inlet service spillway structure and a 30 inch outlet conduit. The size of the dam is intermediate and the hazard potential is high. The dam was found to be in fair condtion. The drainage area of the dam is 1.3 square miles and is made up of primarily of rolling hill woodland.

The dam consists of an earth embankment approximately 630 ft. long and 40 ft. high with an ungated spillway about 40 ft. long at the center of the structure. The only outlet is a 24-in. pipe from a gate house intake located in the upstream slope. Based on a visual examination of the structure, the earth embankment and spillway are in good to fair condition. There was no evidence of settlement, lateral movement or other signs of structural failure or other conditions which would warrant urgent remedial treatment. The spillway has a capacity of 1790 cfs with flashboards removed and can pass the PMF outflow of 1530 cfs (750 csm) with the water level 0.6 ft. below the top of the concrete core wall.

Waldo Lake is an earth dam about 400 ft. long and 17 ft. high. The facility is in fair condition. The spillway capacity is limited and the left dike is essentially unprotected against erosion during any overtopping flow. The size classification is small and the hazard potential is high, the spillway test flood selected is the Probable Maximum Flood.
