This special edition book on Yoshitomo Nara, one of the most prominent contemporary artists working today, shows the complexity of his work over the past three decades. Thirty years after Yoshitomo Nara rocketed to fame with his Neo-Pop paintings of sinister childlike figures, the artist has deepened his practice. Along with his most recognizable pieces, such as his ceramic figurines and ubiquitous portraits of wide-eyed children, readers will discover his less-known aspects of his works including outdoor sculpture, illustrations on paper, and early versions of his figures. Nara's work is influenced by a passion for punk and rock music, popular culture, manga, and growing up in post-World War II Japan. This special edition book includes a slipcase with 13 booklets featuring the full range of Nara's work. It also includes an LP vinyl record with songs selected by the artist on side A and original music and covers by Yo La Tengo, the American indie rock band, on side B. Published with the Los Angeles County Museum of Art

“In this rigorous and beautifully researched volume, Milanich considers the tension between social and biological definitions of fatherhood, and shows how much we still have to learn about what constitutes a father.” —Andrew Solomon, author of Far from the Tree: Parents, Children, and the Search for Identity For most of human history, the notion that paternity was uncertain appeared to be an immutable law of nature. The unknown father provided entertaining plotlines from Shakespeare to the Victorian novelists and lay at the heart of inheritance and child support disputes. But in the 1920s new scientific advances promised to solve the mystery of paternity once and for all. The stakes were high: fatherhood has always been a public relationship as well as a private one. It confers not only patrimony and legitimacy but also a name, nationality, and identity. The new science of paternity, with methods such as blood typing, fingerprinting, and facial analysis, would bring clarity to the conundrum of fatherhood—or so it appeared. Suddenly, it would be possible to establish family relationships, expose adulterous affairs, locate errant fathers, unravel baby mix-ups, and discover one’s true race and ethnicity. Tracing the scientific quest for the father up to the present, with the advent of seemingly foolproof DNA analysis, Nara Milanich shows that the effort to establish biological truth has not ended the quest for the father. Rather, scientific certainty has revealed the fundamentally social, cultural, and political nature of paternity. As Paternity shows, in the age of modern genetics the answer to the question “Who’s your father?” remains as complicated as ever.

Easily one of the most important Japanese artists of the recent past, Yoshitomo Nara (born 1959) has rocketed to worldwide fame for his darkly whimsical figures that put a creepy twist on childhood ingenuousness. For his 2009 exhibition at the Reykjavik Art Museum, Nara presented his works within the wooden shipping crates in which they had been transported to the museum. Pictures were hung on the outside of the crates, and figures lurked within their interior nooks. This beautifully produced board book records and continues the show's themes of containment and transportation: it features windows that can be opened to reveal the youthful figures ensconced within their confinements, waiting to be freed by the participation of the reader. Yoshitomo Nara was born in 1959, in Aomori, Japan. He is one of the leading artists of Japan's Neo Pop movement. His drawings and paintings are informed by a range of influences, from manga and anime to punk rock. He has also worked in sculpture, ceramic and large-scale installation. In the fall of 2010, the Asia Society in New York presented the first major New York exhibition of his work.
