When my Husband and I became Grandparents, we were surprised at the uncontrollable and endless flow of love and affection we felt for our Grandchildren. It was a feeling that seemed to equal, or surpass the feelings we had for our children when they were growing up (sorry kids). But we soon found that while the love seemed to be as equal, expressing it was different. My maternal Grandmother displayed that same kind of endless flow of love for her grand kids. I knew her as Granny, and I believe she was the litmus test, the gold standard for all Grandmothers. She showered all of her grand kids with unconditional love, and made each of us feel as if we were the most important person in the world. I knew Granny as Granny, and I am sure that I didn't learn her last name until I was much older. To me her name could have been Granny, No Middle Initial, Granny, because to us it was about the way she made us feel, and how we felt about her, and the name Granny was all we needed to know. My grand kids call me Grandma, and for the longest time, that was my first and last name to them, and I didn't mind at all.

“A celebration of specific manifestations of universal love. . . . A deep and beautiful book modeling grandmothers as heroines.” —Kirkus Reviews (starred review) In this big universe full of many moons, I have traveled and seen many wonders, but I have never loved anything or anyone the way I love my grandma. While Mina is growing up in Iran, the center of her world is her grandmother. Whether visiting friends next door, going to the mosque for midnight prayers during Ramadan, or taking an imaginary trip around the planets, Mina and her grandma are never far apart. At once deeply personal and utterly universal, Mina Javaherbin’s words make up a love letter of the rarest sort: the kind that shares a bit of its warmth with every reader. Soft, colorful, and full of intricate patterns, Lindsey Yankey’s illustrations feel like a personal invitation into the coziest home filled with familial adoration.

Smart, warm, telling, and funny, Funny, Your Don't Look Like a Grandmother is the perfect bouquet for today's grandmother, that active and interesting woman who is old enough to be somebody's grandmother and young enough to run around the world. Lois Wyse's new book, charmingly illustrated by Lilla Rogers, is a collection of wit and wisdom for today's Nana, Grandma, Goo-Goo, or Gran. How can you recognize today's grandmother? Easy, says Wyse. The grandmother is the one who goes out more and complains less than her daughter. In the spirit of Erma Bombeck and Bill Cosby, Lois Wyse tells loving and amusing stories that illustrate the joys of contemporary grandmothering. According to Lois Wyse, "A mother becomes a true grandmother the day she stops noticing the terrible things her children do because she is so enchanted with the wonderful things her grandchildren do." Contemporary grandmothers and their children and grandchildren will see themselves in these reflections of family life that include everything from how it feels to become a grandmother to gentle advice on parenting and career grandmothers. Funny, You Don't Look Like a Grandmother is the first nontraditional book about grandmothers who may not look like grandmothers -- but who love as deeply as the generations of grannies who preceded them.
