In 1977, graduate student Irene Pepperberg walked into a pet store and bought a year-old African grey parrot. Because she was going to study him, she decided to call him Alex--short for Avian Learning EXperiment. At that time, most scientists thought that the bigger the brain, the smarter the creature; they studied great apes and dolphins. African greys, with their walnut-sized "birdbrains," were pretty much ignored--until Alex. His intelligence surprised everyone, including Irene. He learned to count, add, and subtract; to recognize shapes, sizes, and colors; and to speak, and understand, hundreds of words. These were things no other animal could do. Alex wasn't supposed to have the brainpower to do them, either. But he did them anyway. Accompanied by Meilo So's stunning illustrations, Alex and Irene's story is one of groundbreaking discoveries about animal intelligence, hard work, and the loving bonds of a unique friendship.

Table of Contents Introduction What is a guinea pig? What kinds of guinea pigs are there? Where did guinea pigs come from? The history of guinea pigs and humans Breeding guinea pigs Show guinea pigs Guinea pigs as food Conclusion Author Bio Publisher Introduction Guinea pigs are some of the cutest pets around, with a history going back thousands of years. Nowadays, guinea pigs are popular pets among many people. The guinea pig is not only adorable, but a cornerstone of the Andean civilizations; there is so much more to guinea pigs than their current position as a very popular pet for company, showing, and breeding. In places outside of modern society, they still hold a place in the rituals and healing of many peoples. As a pet more delicate than rabbits or cat, or especially dogs, the guinea pig survives as it is due to thousands of years of breeding and protection by humans. The guinea pig is an animal that has captured the imagination of many people, from Beatrix Potter and C.S. Lewis to the ancient peoples of the Andean area. Hopefully, it will capture your imagination as well!

Smilodon - Saber-toothed Tiger Table of Contents Introduction Chapter 1: Appearance Chapter 2: Behavior Chapter 3: Environment Conclusion Author Bio Introduction Greetings young reader! Today we are going to take a step back in time and enter the age of prehistoric mammals. Mammals are animals with hair or fur that secrete milk for their babies, and typically give birth to live young as opposed to laying eggs. These prehistoric mammals are an extinct species of animal that began to live on the Earth about 2.5 million years ago. Some of them still thrived as recently as 10,000 years ago. “Extinct” means that they no longer exist. These prehistoric mammals are some of the most intriguing and awe-inspiring animals that have existed on our planet. The prehistoric mammals’ strange shapes, sizes, and behaviors make them inherently worthy of study and interest. Even more than these reasons, the study of these mammals itself is an incredible adventure which requires thought and imagination. The study of prehistoric animals helps you to appreciate just how mysterious nature really is. Our planet supports not only us and the animals that live today, but it even supported creatures as gigantic and strange as the giant sloths and huge cave dwelling bears- just think how cool that is! I hope that you bring a spirit of openness and wonder to your study of the prehistoric animals, and that you come to appreciate the mystery and value of this imaginative adventure. Today we are going to discuss the Smilodon. The Smilodon is also commonly referred to as the saber-tooth tiger or saber-tooth cat because of its long canines. We are going to learn about the Smilodon and explore the world that it lived in. We know what we know about the prehistoric mammals from a variety of sources including fossils, biology, and other scientific disciplines. Fossils are the ancient remains of these animals, the most familiar being their bones. Biological science is the study of life in general, but many scientists compare prehistoric animals to modern day animals to support their theories. Before a talk about animals can take place it is important that we discuss the theory of evolution. Evolutionary theory purports that all the animals we know and see today are the direct descendants of animals that existed millions of years ago. The dinosaurs and other creatures that existed millions of years ago either died out or gradually changed into different animals. For instance, birds are considered to be surviving dinosaurs because their dinosaur ancestors survived the dinosaur extinction event (we will discuss this later). The prehistoric mammals’ ancestor was an animal that outlived the dinosaurs and survived the extinction event. Remember that any time you see an * next to the name of an animal, it means that a book has been written about this animal in the Dinosaur Books for Young Readers series. Any word written in bold is an important scientific term which is defined in-text. Italics are used to denote the first time an animal’s name is mentioned in the book.

Table of Contents Introduction What is a pig? What kinds of pigs are there? Where did pigs come from? The history of pigs and humans Babirusas (also known as pig-deer) Pot-belled pigs Red river hogs Wild Boars Feral Pigs Peccaries Warthogs Conclusion Author Bio Publisher Introduction Pigs have long been a part of human life. The ancient Israelites considered them unclean animals, and would not eat them; however, many, many cultures consider them a great source of food. The pig is present in the Chinese zodiac, a way of keeping track of years by assigning twelve animals, one to each year. It’s also said to predict traits and such about people born in those years. It’s the twelfth sign, because, according to legend, the pig showed up last to the great meeting where the animals were assigned to a system. The pig has long been a sign of gluttony, especially in Western culture. In the book Animal Farm, they greedily consume the best of the food, and do almost none of the work. Pigs are considered dirty, but the fact is, they tend to be very clean animals. They do consume a lot of food, but not all pigs are fat; it’s mostly domesticated (bred to serve humans) pigs that are as obese-looking as you see in the modern day. They are very interesting creatures.

Table of Contents Introduction What is a sloth? What kinds of sloths are there? Relatives of sloths The history of sloths and humans Pygmy three-toed sloth Hoffman’s two-toed sloth Brown-throated sloth Giant sloth Conclusion Author Bio Publisher Introduction You’ve probably heard of someone being called a sloth, or even of one of the Seven Deadly Sins, Sloth. But what is a sloth, and how did it come to be used as a bad thing to be called? You might guess that it’s some sort of horrible animal, but the truth couldn’t be any different. Sloths are slow creatures, named for the sin rather than the other way around. However, there is nothing wrong with being slow, and as you’ll see, they are quite loveable creatures that cause harm to almost no one (other than things like insects).
