Hinduism is one of the world's oldest and greatest religious traditions. In captivating prose, Shashi Tharoor untangles its origins, its key philosophical concepts and texts. He explores everyday Hindu beliefs and practices, from worship to pilgrimage to caste, and touchingly reflects on his personal beliefs and relationship with the religion. Not one to shy from controversy, Tharoor is unsparing in his criticism of 'Hindutva', an extremist, nationalist Hinduism endorsed by India's current government. He argues urgently and persuasively that it is precisely because of Hinduism's rich diversity that India has survived and thrived as a plural, secular nation. If narrow fundamentalism wins out, Indian democracy itself is in peril.

Hindu philosophy tells us that the most important thing in life is Karma (action). Purposeful action done with integrity leads to Purushartha(worthy endeavors, achievements and fulfillments). Purushartha has four aspects – Dharma (right aims, objectives and endeavors), Artha (acquisition of physical necessities), Kama (emotional fulfillment) and Moksha (riddance of clutter, both physical and mental). These ideas were not created in a day, but accumulation of thoughts over the ages and generations. The first thinkers were the Rakshasas and their deity, Yam, gave us the first laws and philosophies. Over the millenniums many additional laws and by-laws came up. This gave us a very dynamic society which scoured the seas, the story of which is narrated in the Samudra Manthan. Through Samudra Manthan many new ideas came from other lands which got incorporated into Indian thoughts and this dynamism created the Indus Valley civilization (IVC). In IVC people of many cultures came to reside and that created a vast literature comprising Manusmriti, Puranas, Samhitas, Vedas, Gita, Mahabharata and many others. The new philosophy of Vaishnavism came up and transformed India to such an extent that India became known as the bird with golden feathers. However, for reasons not fully known the IVC collapsed but the engineers and architects who created IVC spread all over the then known world and made those worlds richer and magnificient. This narrative is an attempt to recount this lost saga in a very simple language. The author hopes that it will be interesting to the reader.

Hinduism is more than a religion; it is a way of life. Its rich and multicoloured history has made the structure of its mythical and philosophical principles into a highly differentiated maze, of which total knowledge is a practical impossibility. This volume cannot offer a complete survey of the meaning of Hinduism. It is an extensive compilation of important deities and their divine manifestations, so that modern students can understand the significance of the Hindu pantheon.

What Is Hinduism? provides one of the most provocative, engaging and detailed examinations of this oldest religious and spiritual tradition in the world. Followed by over a billion people, including a great majority in India, Hinduism is the third largest religion in the world. The teachings of Yoga and Vedanta are followed by millions in every continent. Enriched with a profound pluralistic view, Hinduism emphasizes that the Truth is One but has many paths. Yet, despite its universality, Hinduism remains the most misunderstood of the world's major religions, partly because of its antiquity and the vast extent of its teachings. Acknowledging the importance of the religion and its growing influence globally, David Frawley has addressed the prime teachings of Hinduism, its role in India, its place in the information age and has compiled an exhaustive set of questions and answers dwelling on all the significant issues. This essential learning helps us understand our spiritual heritage as a species and the place of India among the greatest civilizations of the world- ancient and modern. Further, the book charts out how Hindus can overcome the challenges confronting them today and communicate their diverse tradition more effectively, making it an ideal book for the Hindu youth.
