Excerpt from My Boyhood IN the beginning, at least, Father wrote these sketches of his boyhood and early farm life as a matter of self-defense: I had made a determined attempt to write them and when I did this I was treading on what was to him more or less sacred ground, for as he once said in a letter to me, You will be homesick; I know just how I felt when I left home forty-three years ago. And I have been more or less homesick ever since. The love of the old hills and of Father and Mother is deep in the very foundations of my being. He had an intense love of his birthplace and cherished every memory of his boyhood and of his family and of the old farm high up on the side of Old Clump the mountain out of whose loins I sprang -so that when I tried to write of him he felt it was time he took the matter in hand. The following pages are the result. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from My Boyhood: A Story Book for Boys I know there are many errors in the book, and that as a boy I did many things I should not, but I trust my readers will be lenient to the for mer and kindly overlook the latter, for they will see I went to the dogs before I was into my teens, and therefore much cannot be expected from an old fellow who made such a bad begin ning. I know they will skip all the accounts of my evil doings, and deeply ponder over those that are good (if there are any); for since my days boys are not the young limbs my Old nurse said I was. Excerpt from Days of Boyhood How often when we have become men, does our memory recur to the scenes and incidents of our youth! Such a thing happened the man is accustomed to say, such a thing was said, or done, when I was a boy. In this little book I have written some of the many things which my own memory retains of my early days. I give it the title, days OF boyhood, not because. Excerpt from A New England Boyhood Mr. Scudder asked me to furnish some chapters, with the attractive title of A New England Boyhood, from my own memories, in such form that they might be published in the Atlantic Monthly. And this I was glad to do. Those chapters, published in that magazine in 1892, make more than half of the book now in the reader's hands. Excerpt from The Story of My Boyhood and Youth, And, a Thousand-Mile Walk to the Gulf Longest is the life that contains the largest amount of time-effacing enjoyment of work that is a steady delight. Such a life may really comprise an eternity upon earth. These words of John Muir I noted down after one of our last conversations. To few men was it given to realize so completely the element of eternity of time-efi'acing enjoyment in work as it was to John Muir. The secret of it all was in his soul, the soul of a child, of a poet, and of a strong man, all blended into one. Only such a one would have mounted the top of a pine tree in a gale - swept forest in order to enjoy the better the passionate music of the storm, and then tell how we all travel the milky way together, trees and men, but it never occurred to me until this storm-day, he wrote, that trees are travelers in the ordinary sense. They make many journeys, not exten sive ones it is true; but our own little journeys, away and back again, are only little more than tree-wavings many of them not so much. But the play of his rich imagination did not pause with the adventure in the tree-top. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from When Daddy Was a Boy There probably never was a father who did not have to face the demand, Daddy, tell me a story about when you were a little boy. And there probably never was a boy who did not find a story about his own father's boyhood more fascinating than any other. The stories which follow were in answer to such demands. Many of them are partly true, even the one Negro folk-lore story having this element of truth - that it was told to me in my boyhood, with many others of the Bre'r Rabbit and Bre'r Fox kind, by my own old black folks around the cabin fire. I incorporate this one as a sample, yet I use only one because they have all been published before. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
