Excerpt from Music-Hall Sermons Tions, these discourses are now given to the public in the precise form in which they were delivered. Prepared as they were while the writer was under the pressure of continual duties, in weariness often, and mid many distractions, he is sensible of their literary imperfections. He laments most that the truths he aimed to inculcate suffer because of the weakness of the utterance. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Revival of Religion Which We Need: A Sermon, Delivered at Music Hall, Boston, on Sunday, April 11, 1858 Fifth: Look at the condition of woman. There is no conscious antagonism betwixt men and women; each doubtless unconsciously aims to be more than fair to the other; but no where has woman her natural right. In the market, the state, the church, she is not counted the equal of man. Hence come mon strous evils - prostitution, dependence, lack of individual character, enforced celibacy, not more grateful to maid than to man, meant for neither him nor her; and hence come those marriages which are worse than celibacy it self. Excerpt from Echoes From Central Music Hall: Selections From the Recent Sermons of Professor David Swing What touches one educated heart touches all hearts. There is for all our race one pathos, one laughter, one beauty. As the name of each flower of earth moves all hearts, and as each page of literature moves all thinking minds, whether that page was composed in Athens or in Italy, or by Schiller or Lamartine or Cervantes, so the name of each nation touches the soul, because, he who is a good citizen of one land is the child of all countries. To fill the earth with such Christian citizens will be the final task and triumph of religion. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The New Crime Against Humanity: A Sermon, Preached at the Music Hall, in Boston, on Sunday, June 4, 1854 Mr. Loring asked Mr. Burns if he wanted time to think of the matter, and counsel to aid in his defence. I shall never forget how he looked around that court room, at the Marshal, the kidnapper's lawyers, the Commissioner, the claimant and his witness! Save the counsel whom he had never seen before, there was scarce a friendly face that his eye rested on. At length he said timidly and catching for breath, Yes. Mr. Loring put Off the case until Saturday. The Fugitive Slave Bill Commisioner was to lecture at Cambridge on Fri day. He is a Professor at Harvard College, and he could not conveniently hold court on that day. He is a Judge Of Probate, and looks after widows and orphans he must be in the Probate Office on Monday. Saturday was the most convenient day for the Commissioner. SO in a matter which was to determine whether the prisoner should be a free man or only a thing which might be sold and beaten as a beast, the court allowed him forty-eight hours delay. It really gave him time to breathe a little. Let us be grateful to the Commissioner He gave more favor than any Fugitive Slave Bill Commissioners have done before, I believe.
