How, in 1705, was Thomas Salmon, a parson from Bedfordshire, able to persuade the Royal Society that a musical performance could constitute a scientific experiment? Or that the judgement of a musical audience could provide evidence for a mathematically precise theory of musical tuning? This book presents answers to these questions. It constitutes a general history of quantitative music theory in the late seventeenth century as well as a detailed study of one part of that history: namely the applications of mathematical and mechanical methods of understanding to music that were produced in England between 1653 and 1705, beginning with the responses to Descartes's 1650 Compendium music?and ending with the Philosophical Transactions' account of the appearance of Thomas Salmon at the Royal Society in 1705. The book is organized around four key questions. Do musical pitches form a small set or a continuous spectrum? Is there a single faculty of hearing which can account for musical sensation, or is more than one faculty at work? What is the role of harmony in the mechanical world, and where can its effects be found? And what is the relationship between musical theory and musical practice? These are questions which are raised and discussed in the sources themselves, and they have wide significance for early modern theories of knowledge and sensation more generally, as well as providing a fascinating side light onto the world of the scientific revolution.

You 2.0 is not another book from a long selection of technology manuals. It is not about software updates for your smartphone or tablet, nor a rationale for upgrading your computer hardware to a bigger, better, faster, newer model. What you will discover, however, is far more important for a life update. A life upgrade. The updates, and the ultimate upgrade, addressed here involves the very core of your being. It's about updating your self—of doing a “soul update.” It involves updating your life so you are not stuck with Version 1.0 of your self when Version 2.0 is freely available to you right away. This work presents the promise of complete life- transformation. If you choose to accept this update, you will be guided through the steps necessary to move from Version 1.0 to Version 2.0 of your self. This update process begins with the decision to let the master-programmer of your life install a whole new spiritual operating system in you. The update, and the upgrade process is total…ongoing…and powerful. At the end of each short chapter you will find a series of questions designed to help you think through and talk about what you're reading. Discussing these questions with trusted friends, teachers or family members, will help you clarify and personalize what you are reading. So if you are ready to upgrade from You 1.0 to You 2.0, turning to the next page is like clicking agree.

These essays by one of America's foremost historians of art and architecture range over theory and criticism, the search for connections between art and science in the Renaissance, and specific works of Renaissance architecture. The largest group of essays, dealing with the character of Renaissance architecture, are models of art historical scholarship in their direct approach to identifying the essentials of a building and the social and intellectual context in which they should be viewed. Another group of essays explores encounters between the traditions of artistic practice and early optics and color theory. The three essays that begin this collection bring to light the intellectual and moral concerns that underlie all of Ackerman's art historical work.

Part of the widespread reassessment of the foundations of the modern world in Europe, arguing that in Scotland, humanism and Calvinism made the moral function of scholarship a major debate, which shaped the course of the Enlightenment there.
