This work skeptically explores the notion that the internet will soon obviate any need for traditional print-based academic libraries. It makes a case for the library's staying power in the face of technological advancements (television, microfilm, and CD-ROM's were all once predicted as the contemporary library's heir-apparent), and devotes individual chapters to the pitfalls and prevarications of popular search engines, e-books, and the mass digitization of traditional print material.

Multimedia, as product and application, can have potential roles in enhancing learning in Library and Information Science. Certainly multimedia resources are increasingly embraced in higher education. On the contrary, multimedia in secondary education has not been met with enthusiasm. Such as Library professionals' attitudes, unawareness of it importance and relevancy, lack of training and administration are some factors contribute resistance of multimedia uses. To advance the use of multimedia technology, Library professionals should be convinced of its importance, relevancy and practicality. This book discusses some of the expected features of multimedia based education and the Library's approach that promote active learning. Globalization of the information transmitting system in its complexity of scientific, educational, social and economic demands of society has lead to the formation of the international information market. Libraries have always held an important position in the entire information market and will continue to do so in the future. When talking about the development of libraries it is important to come to terms with the most important scientific-technological and economic realities of the present time: * the constant appearance of new information carriers on the market; * the fast development of hardware and software; * the constant development of new communication technology; * the increasing competition on the market of information performance; * the increasing educational factors on the job market. Multimedia has developed as a reality that at the same time has an effect on rational thinking and on emotional creation. This will eventually lead to a qualitatively new perception of events and appearances of our surroundings and will activate associative thinking amongst other things. The new thing in principle of multimedia formation is that - instead of the former well-known technologies - now the numerical technology on a computer basis is used for the co-operation with different analogue media (cinema, TV, etc.). Thus we will gain a synthesis of information of all carriers and transmitters. These all aspects have been highlighted in this book - "Indian Scenario: Role of Multimedia in Library & Information Science".The present situation of the modern library system differs from all previous situations; the library technologies are undergoing active digitalization. Building a multimedia library is big undertaking, but it is very exciting one and one that will ensure a library a place in the hearts and minds of the users of the 21st Century. This work considers in depth the issues surrounding the analytical study of multimedia library resources and tools. The first Chapter provides introduction to the Multimedia Library and Multimedia technology. The second chapter describes the multimedia resources and tools in detail. The third chapter describes multimedia sock and multimedia catalogue. The fourth chapter describes the influence of multimedia on the interior design of libraries. The fifth and final chapter describes tune retrieval in the multimedia libraries. This book addresses important issues and directs the reader to consider them and decide on their unique solution. There are numerous resources and further reading for all these issues to assist the reader in obtaining a well-rounded view of the issue and to show what others have done, and what the current thinking is.The future will be with us tomorrow and a multimedia library needs to be prepared for it more than most today itself. Here good basic design with an eye on the immediate and longer term future is the foundation. The rest of structure must be built using tools and techniques which provide solid reliable operation with the flexibility to change and adapt and innovate in the future.
