This extensive work is the first dictionary in the field of automatic control to cover the technical terms of the field in these eight languages. It will certainly prove itself a valuable aid to all control engineers and systems scientists and will undoubtedly become the recognized standard for the technical terms in this field. Engineers and scientists will also find it a great help when writing research papers for publication in English language journals and preparing oral presentations at scientific conferences. This unique dictionary contains over 1600 terms covering the entire field of control and automation, derived from the technical committees of IFAC (the International Federation of Automatic Control) and the conferences that it organizes. To facilitate its use in all eight languages the dictionary is divided into two main sections. Firstly, the 1600 technical terms are arranged alphabetically in English with their equivalents in the other languages listed along the page. The second section consists of alphabetical listings in the other seven languages with each term numbered to correspond with the English term in the first section. The Chinese, Japanese and Russian entries all appear in their own alphabet and with roman transliterations to permit wider use. Published by Pergamon in collaboration with IFAC, the International Federation of Automatic Control.

This dictionary contains terms from the fields of automatic control, which includes mathematical modelling, simulation of dynamic systems, automation technology with its corresponding elements, and robotics. It also includes signal processing, information technologies and production technologies. The terminological dictionary is primarily aimed at experts and students who deal with control technology and dynamic systems in both technical and non-technical domains. To be able to use the dictionary, at least basic knowledge in this field is required. In the dictionary users will find concise terminological definitions. A concept may be designated by different terms; therefore, cross-references are used. The aim of the dictionary is to collect and unify – at least to an achievable extent – the terminology in the field of automatic control, dynamic systems and robotics.

Training for Tomorrow: Educational Aspects of Computerized Automation is a collection of papers that discusses the introduction of automated systems in all sectors of industry, business, and society. The materials in the title particularly tackle the training concerns in the implementation of automated systems. The issues addressed in the text include training in administrative automation; development of operator training as an integrated part of the specification, design, and implementation of a process control system; and training for the planning of large-scale control systems. The selection also talks about the maintenance of professionals' training course; the feasibility of success in retraining non-EDP college graduates for EDP occupations; and the future of automation. The book will be of great interest to individuals concerned with the implication of implementing automated systems in various sectors of industry, business, and society.

Real Time Programming 1983 contains the proceedings of the 12th IFAC/IFIP Workshop held at Hatfield, UK on March 29-31, 1983. The book organizes the papers of the workshop into four categories: Programming Support Environments; Testing Real-Time Programs; Databases for Real-Time Systems; and Languages and Language Implementations. The papers on Programming Support Environments category cover application-oriented requirements specifications, configuration control, and design description languages of real-time programming. Papers on Databases for Real-Time Systems category talk about wide range of aspects of the problem in the system. Five papers on Testing Real-Time Programs category show importance of structure in producing software; principles in testing and reliability issues; use of separate computer for measuring and tracing real-time software; set of tools and methods for testing real-time software; and set of debugging facilities incorporated into the language Modula. The Languages and Language Implementations category explains the exception handling mechanisms provided by languages; performance of the run-time support to task management in ADA; and implementation of multi-tasking and inter-task message passing for Industrial Real-Time Basic.

Presented at this workshop were mathematical models upon which process control is based and the practical applications of this method of control within industry; case studies include examples from the paper and pulp industry, materials industry and the chemical industry, among others. From these presentations emerged a need for further research and development into process control. Containing 19 papers these Proceedings will be a valuable reference work for all those involved in the designing of continuous production processes for industry and for the end user involved in the practical application of process control within their manufacturing process.

Artificial Intelligence in Real-Time Control documents the proceedings of the IFAC Workshop held in Clyne Castle, Swansea, UK, 21-23 September 1988. It includes two keynote addresses that discussed architectural issues for expert systems in real-time control; the problem of representing knowledge and reasoning; and the problems encountered in obtaining such information. Other papers contained in these proceedings are representative of the major research bodies active throughout the world in the application of AI techniques in real-time control, although it was inevitable that a Europe-based conference would highlight the work of the European groups. While AI is clearly still in the process of establishing itself, it is undoubtedly a major new area of engineering endeavor. Practical experience is still relatively limited, and many of the results discussed at this event were obtained through simulation or, in a few cases, from reduced practical experience. The importance, though, lies in the fact that many countries are pouring extensive resources into the attempt to control difficult processes by using AI techniques. The wide cross section of interest was demonstrated by the fact that many diverse industries were represented at the workshop—ranging from power-systems control to telecommunications, and into the steel industry.
