Low-dimensional materials are of fundamental interest in physics and chemistry and have also found a wide variety of technological applica tions in fields ranging from microelectronics to optics. Since 1986, several seminars and summer schools devoted to low-dimensional systems have been supported by NATO. The present one, Physics, Fabrication and Applications of Multilayered structures, brought together specialists from different fields in order to review fabrication techniques, charac terization methods, physics and applications. Artificially layered materials are attractive because alternately layering two (or more) elements, by evaporation or sputtering, is a way to obtain new materials with (hopefully) new physical properties that pure materials or alloys do not allow. These new possibilities can be ob tained in electronic transport, optics, magnetism or the reflectivity of x-rays and slow neutrons. By changing the components and the thickness of the layers one can track continuously how the new properties appear and follow the importance of the multilayer structure of the materials. In addition, with their large number of interfaces the study of inter face properties becomes easier in multilayered structures than in mono layers or bilayers. As a rule, the role of the interface quality, and also the coupling between layers, increases as the thickness of the layer decreases. Several applications at the development stage require layer thicknesses of just a few atomic layers.

This book is designed as a course in the phonetic transcription of normal and disordered speech. What differentiates this book from existing approaches to phonetic transcription and conversational analysis is that it concentrates on linking together layers of detail to result in a complete record for the entire range of transcribable behaviors. Müller's book represents the first attempt to amalgamate differing methods to give phoneticians and clinicians a transcriptional tool kit, thus allowing them to generate a rich description of their data. This approach results in a variety of layers of transcription, all or some of which are available to the clinician or researcher faced with the task of transcribing speech. The layers include a base, orthographic layer; segmental and suprasegmental phonetic layers; a gaze and gesture layer; a layer for marking aspects of discourse (e.g., overlap); and finally, a layer for highlighting behaviors of specific clinical interest (e.g., stuttering behavior). This book clearly lays out the various layers of transcription in this approach, illustrating them with normal and clinical data as well as exercises for the reader. Each chapter in the book addresses a different layer of transcription, with a final chapter illustrating how to bring the layers together. Worked examples accompany each chapter, and appendices provide a quick reference to symbols and transcription conventions. Clinicians who need to transcribe speech samples for diagnosing disorders, planning treatment, and measuring treatment efficacy milestones will value that added precision available from use of the upgraded transcription techniques elucidated in this book.

The world has become more interconnected over the past few decades. Against this backdrop, economic and financial contagion following adverse shocks can have a severe impact on the global economy. How systemic can the effects of contagion be? What specific transmission channels are involved? What is their relative importance? We address these questions using a multilayered global network model of contagion that simulates the impact of sovereign debt default on the global economy. We also develop a measure of global systemic risk and use bank stress testing techniques to quantify the systemic impact of the shock and the extent of contagion on the global economy. Our model shows that economic and financial contagion are highly non-linear, and many bystander economies can experience significant negative effects as the initial default is spread through the network. This suggests that many economies might be systemically more important than what conventional measures of size or openness might suggest.
