The Materials Research Society Symposium B, 'Multifunctional Polymeric and Hybrid Materials', was held November 30-December 5 at the 2014 MRS Fall Meeting in Boston, Massachusetts. This symposium proceedings volume includes recent advances in the process of achieving multifunctionality of materials by mimicry of biological structure and interactions, by the presence of natural or biologically active components, such as enzymes or polymeric prodrugs, via complex, but controlled physical behavior, e.g., actively moving polymers (shape-memory, shape-morphing), or by simultaneously performing multiple activities, e.g., interacting with a biological environment while also imaging it. Additional functions include electrical or thermal conductivity, redox behavior, (bio)sensing, temperature-dependent behavior, bio-compatibility and/or controlled degradation, bioresponsive drug delivery and self-healing. The papers are divided into four sections, representing the principal topics of Symposium B: (1) Multifunctional Composites, (2) Stimuli-Sensitive Polymers and Gels, (3) Characterization of Multifunctional Polymer Systems, and (4) Structured Surfaces and Multilayered Polymers.

Twin polymerization is a novel approach where two distinct polymers are produced from a single source monomer, thus being an excellent tool for the synthesis of hybrid materials. The author introduces the principles of various twin polymerization processes, their classification and practical use. The book is supplied with numerous individual examples, demonstrating the potential of this strategy in materials synthesis.

This book introduces the recent progress that has resulted from utilizing the idea of "element-block polymers". A structural unit consisting of various groups of elements is called an "element-block." The design and synthesis of new element-blocks, polymerization of these blocks, and development of methods of forming higher-order structures and achieving hierarchical interface control in order to yield the desired functions are expected to result in manifold advantages. These benefits will encourage the creation of new polymeric materials that share, at a high level, electronic, optical, and magnetic properties not achievable with conventional organic polymeric materials as well as forming properties of molding processability and flexible designability that inorganic materials lack. By pioneering innovative synthetic processes that exploit the reactivity of elements and the preparation techniques employed for inorganic element-blocks, the aim is (1) to create a new series of innovative polymers based on the novel concept of element-block polymers, in which the characteristics of elements are extensively combined and utilized, and (2) to formulate theories related to these polymers. This book demonstrates especially the design strategies and the resulting successful examples offering highly functional materials that utilize element-block polymers as a key unit.
