Neil Simon (1927–2018) began as a writer for some of the leading comedians of the day—including Jackie Gleason, Red Buttons, Phil Silvers, and Jerry Lewis—and he wrote for fabled television programs alongside a group of writers that included Mel Brooks, Woody Allen, Larry Gelbart, Michael Stewart, and Sid Caesar. After television, Simon embarked on a playwriting career. In the next four decades he saw twenty-eight of his plays and five musicals produced on Broadway. Thirteen of those plays and three of the musicals ran for more than five hundred performances. He was even more widely known for his screenplays—some twenty-five in all. Yet, despite this success, it was not until his BB Trilogy—Brighton Beach Memoirs, Biloxi Blues, and Broadway Bound—that critics and scholars began to take Simon seriously as a literary figure. This change in perspective culminated in 1991 when his play Lost in Yonkers won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama. In the twenty-two interviews included in Conversations with Neil Simon, Simon talks candidly about what it was like to write commercially successful plays that were dismissed by critics and scholars. He also speaks at length about the differences between writing for television, for the stage, and for film. He speaks openly and often revealingly about his relationships with, among many others, Mike Nichols, Walter Matthau, Sid Caesar, and Jack Lemmon. Above all, these interviews reveal Neil Simon as a writer who thought long and intelligently about creating for stage, film, and television, and about dealing with serious subjects in a comic mode. In so doing, Conversations with Neil Simon compels us to recognize Neil Simon’s genius.

This Report deals with the investigation into the conduct of Mr Simon Hughes: that he failed to register six donations to his local party received from four named companies over six years despite the links he had with the donors; that he failed to declare two of these financial interests, in the House and in the Public Bill Committee on the Scrap Metal Dealers Bill; that he failed to declare two of these financial interests when approaching another Member and local councillors; and that he arranged one meeting which amounted to lobbying for reward or consideration, contrary to the rules of the House. The Committee agrees that the meeting Mr Hughes arranged to discuss a local development did not constitute a breach of the lobbying rules. There was no attempt to conceal the donations to Mr Hughes's local party, which were reported to the Electoral Commission, although there was a failure to include them in the Register of Members' Financial Interests, and a failure to declare interests. The publication of the Commissioner's memorandum sets on record Mr Hughes's failures to declare appropriately. Mr Hughes apologised at the outset. The Committee recommends that he now registers any outstanding interests; late registrations will appear in bold italics. Nonetheless there is concern that a Member of Mr Hughes's seniority and experience should have failed to observe The Code of Conduct over such a long period and failed to seek advice from the Registrar. Mr Hughes should apologise by way of a Personal Statement to the House.

Turning fifteen now, Simon Dreamlee has been allowed to produce his musical production about forbidden teen aged love. Characters resemble Diana Magicdream, the Outsider from Newville with ties to Dreamville and himself, but, they don’t know that. Simon secretly keeps in contact with Diana and their communiqués could have him and his descendants banished from Dreamville forever. Simon quickly learns that his play is not being well received by a small majority of Dreamvillians who do not look like themselves. Simon and his friends are falling ill, still able to dream, but, just miserable when awake. They boycott Simon’s production unsuccessfully, however, this scares Simon into not wanting to share anymore dreams. When King Régimand DreamRoyal is waiting in the hover parkade for Simon and his parents, Simon knows that nothing is right in Dreamville. The dreamy King shows them the secret passages to and from the hover parkade to Dreamtrue School where Simon’s production goes on for Dreamvillians who are still supportive. Simon’s quickly asked to turn himself into the dream police and he learns that the current Dream Squad chief, Louisa DreamNot is the evil Miss DreamNot’s daughter. This knowledge ignites Simon’s ability to dream about the truth, although, this time the clues are more sparse and incoherent.
