He moved with compassion and commiserating those with whom he had been formerly brought up, recalled his army and prohibited any further pursuit. On the following day, Godred gave his army the option of dividing the Isle of Mann between them and dwelling in it; or of plundering the country and returning back again. It pleased them more to pillage the whole island, enrich themselves with the spoils, and then depart. Godred gave to the few of the islanders who chose to remain with him, the southern part of the island, and left the northern to the Manx, with this condition, that none of them whatsoever should attempt to establish a hereditary right to any part of the usurped land.
