The investment industry is changing dramatically, with industry observers commenting that a New Era is dawning. This book describes the changes that have taken place and puts them in a framework that lets the reader understand the past and prepare for the future. The book is written by investment people who have worked for asset management firms and consulted to them for nearly twenty years. The subtitle of the book-Radical Reform for the Investment Industry-speaks to the need for new thinking to solve today's challenges. The authors invoke Einstein's oft-quoted insight: "We cannot solve our problems with the same thinking used when we created them." The new thinking borrows from the world of psychology and social systems to explain the mindsets that created the current investment world and the mindsets that are evolving to create a new paradigm. A major premise of the book is that investment firms must return to their basic mission: serving their clients. And though many firms pay lip service to this goal, evidence in the book suggests otherwise. A major step forward for firms is to think more carefully about their purpose: Why do we exist? What is our value proposition to clients? What is the meaning of the work we do? In their consulting work, the authors find that firms are beginning to take these questions seriously. This step towards meaning is important because the Millennial generation, soon to dominate the work force, is acutely interested in it. The authors believe there are good answers to these questions about purpose but investment leaders have been slow to develop and articulate them. The book provides case studies of investment firms that are demonstrating new leadership with great success. These firms are characterized by skillful leadership, a strong sense of purpose, and highly cohesive cultures. They have moved away from a singular focus on shareholder profits to providing value for all the stakeholders: owners, employees, clients, and society. The book pulls no punches in critiquing the current state of the industry-very low trust with the general population-and suggesting radically different thinking for the future. And while the authors believe there is a valid role for active investing, they recognize that only a small percentage of elite firms can deliver on the goal of superior performance. Thus, most of the resources in the investment industry should be directed towards understanding and meeting client objectives. A major shift in mindsets is from a "competitive" industry to a "service" industry. Finding a balance between these two mindsets is a key skill required of future leaders. The elite firms are finding this balance and enjoying success as a result.

The book presents the key issues with regard to sustainable investing, discussing exchange-traded funds mechanisms and categories in comparison to competing investment funds. The book examines the linkages between ETFs and the FinTech sector in the context of sustainable development, as well as global sustainable development policies in relation to their effects on the popularity of sustainable investing. The book concludes with a discussion of the significance for other entities that may be affected, such as policy makers and recipients of funds invested through sustainable investment strategies. - Includes case studies comparing the sustainable investment landscapes in Europe, United States, and Asia Pacific - Features numerous richly illustrated charts and diagrams - Offers both theoretical and empirical insights - Reviews key academic and professional literature

Decolonizing Wealth is a provocative analysis of the dysfunctional colonial dynamics at play in philanthropy and finance. Award-winning philanthropy executive Edgar Villanueva draws from the traditions from the Native way to prescribe the medicine for restoring balance and healing our divides. Though it seems counterintuitive, the philanthropic industry has evolved to mirror colonial structures and reproduces hierarchy, ultimately doing more harm than good. After 14 years in philanthropy, Edgar Villanueva has seen past the field's glamorous, altruistic façade, and into its shadows: the old boy networks, the savior complexes, and the internalized oppression among the “house slaves,” and those select few people of color who gain access. All these funders reflect and perpetuate the same underlying dynamics that divide Us from Them and the haves from have-nots. In equal measure, he denounces the reproduction of systems of oppression while also advocating for an orientation towards justice to open the floodgates for a rising tide that lifts all boats. In the third and final section, Villanueva offers radical provocations to funders and outlines his Seven Steps for Healing. With great compassion—because the Native way is to bring the oppressor into the circle of healing—Villanueva is able to both diagnose the fatal flaws in philanthropy and provide thoughtful solutions to these systemic imbalances. Decolonizing Wealth is a timely and critical book that preaches for mutually assured liberation in which we are all inter-connected.

“This is an extraordinary book from an extraordinary person. This book is an insightful, candid and passionate account of her approach and policy experience. She has called it a ‘Practical Manual’ for reforms – it is that but also much more: a historical record of reforms against all odds.” – Erik Berglof, Director of LSE Institute of Global Affairs “Many emerging economies often lack practical experience in transforming themselves into fully-functioning market-oriented economies and this Practical Manual will help you with this task. Moreover, the book is precisely about how to accomplish drastic reforms in wartime – and I truly believe that the wartime of COVID-19 is an unprecedented opportunity for reform.” – Valeria Gontareva, Former Governor of the National Bank of Ukraine In addition, Valeria received a nomination for her work as the Governor of the National Bank of Ukraine in the Financial Times’s Women of the Year 2019 list.

In his best-selling Irrational Exuberance, Robert Shiller cautioned that society's obsession with the stock market was fueling the volatility that has since made a roller coaster of the financial system. Less noted was Shiller's admonition that our infatuation with the stock market distracts us from more durable economic prospects. These lie in the hidden potential of real assets, such as income from our livelihoods and homes. But these ''ordinary riches,'' so fundamental to our well-being, are increasingly exposed to the pervasive risks of a rapidly changing global economy. This compelling and important new book presents a fresh vision for hedging risk and securing our economic future. Shiller describes six fundamental ideas for using modern information technology and advanced financial theory to temper basic risks that have been ignored by risk management institutions--risks to the value of our jobs and our homes, to the vitality of our communities, and to the very stability of national economies. Informed by a comprehensive risk information database, this new financial order would include global markets for trading risks and exploiting myriad new financial opportunities, from inequality insurance to intergenerational social security. Just as developments in insuring risks to life, health, and catastrophe have given us a quality of life unimaginable a century ago, so Shiller's plan for securing crucial assets promises to substantially enrich our condition. Once again providing an enormous service, Shiller gives us a powerful means to convert our ordinary riches into a level of economic security, equity, and growth never before seen. And once again, what Robert Shiller says should be read and heeded by anyone with a stake in the economy.

This is the book that made its author Henry George suddenly famous. From the year 1879 to the present the doctrines of 'Progress and Poverty' have been familiar to all who are interested in social problems. The book has been read by many to whom Political Economy is still 'the dismal science', and it has been circulated in cheap editions by the thousand among the classes to which it holds out such an alluring prospect. 'Progress and Poverty' has become a classic in labor literature. Its doctrines have been accepted not only by many who see in them a means of personal rescue from distress and want, but by many others who are convinced by the reasoning of the author. Clergymen , in the Catholic as well as in the Protestant church, have become Mr. George's disciples, and business and professional men have gladly sat at his feet.
