Excerpt from Modern Languages in Education At the meeting of the American Philological Association, which was held in New Haven, in July, 1872, a paper was read by Prof. G. F. Comfort, the Secretary and the chief founder of that society, upon the subject, "Should the Study of the Modern precede that of the Ancient Languages?" taking the affirmative of this question. This paper was published in the August number of Scribner's Monthly Magazine of that year. It covered nearly all the points that are involved in the discussion of the relative merits and claims of the ancient and the modern languages in a general system of education. This subject has recently been brought with great prominence to the attention of the American public, chiefly through the work of the Modern Language Association, and through the action of Harvard University in eliminating Greek from the required studies in the college curriculum. Many calls have been made by teachers and others for the article by Prof. Comfort alluded to above. As the plates for the series of the magazine in which it originally appeared have been destroyed, the undersigned takes pleasure in presenting it to the public in this separate and permanent form, with the title changed to "Modern Languages in Education." Excerpt from The Teaching of Modern Languages The question of methods has doubtless occupied the attention of teachers as long as language teaching has existed. There was a time, however, when there was no dispute regarding those questions which are to-day most generally discussed; when each language teacher, apart from the slight peculiarities of his own individuality, pursued the same course. In this place we are interested merely in foreign-language teaching; and in our discussion we must begin at a point before civilized people, in the accepted meaning of the word, inhabited North America. There was at that time in the Old World but one foreign language in the schools: Latin. It was not until later that Greek was added; it was not until after the destruction of Constantinople by the Turks (1453) that highly educated Greeks fled toward the West, taking with them their language and the remains of their art. Latin became thereafter the common language of the educated, of the learned. Whoever would rise to higher refinement, whoever would enjoy the beauties of the classics, was obliged to learn the ancient languages, - there was no other possibility. And the purpose of such study indicated at once and in a perfectly natural manner the way to be followed - and the means of making the start in this way. Students wished to understand the classics. Without further ado they took up the various authors and began to decipher them, gradually becoming at home in the language. In the Latin schools Cicero was put into the hands of the beginners. Excerpt from Modern Languages, Vol. 2 The reopening of Germany to foreigners will make possible many delayed visits. It would seem appropriate that some of the first travellers should be students and teachers of German, for they, more than most people, will be capable, not only of presenting English views of current international politics, but of learning the trend of public opinion in Germany. In this connection, the interesting communication from Professor Scripture, which will be found on another page, should be of service. The tension which, for some time past, has marked Anglo-French political relations, shows signs of relaxing. We who have no devastated areas, whose sufferings have been so much less terrible than those of the French, have some difficulty in appreciating the French point of view. On the other hand, suffering tends to blind the sufferer to practical considerations. Should the cordiality disappear from the entente, irreparable harm would ensue throughout civilization. Happily the possibility is remote, but those of us who have friends among the French can help to ease the situation considerably by putting more ardour than usual into our relations, and by writing more frequently and at greater length, so proving that, whatever may be the political situation, sympathy between individuals is ever possible. It is hoped that Members of the Association will try to make the Year Book a success; the method to be employed is obvious. The Bibliographies - to mention but one of the many useful features - are indispensable to everyone interested in foreign letters and art. We regret to announce the death of Dr. Aloys Weiss, who, after a long illness, died on November 1 at the age of sixty-nine. He was formerly professor at the R.M.A. at Woolwich, and had been a member of the M.L.A. for twenty-five years. He leaves a widow and son and daughter, to whom we extend our sincere sympathy in their loss. The British School at Rome has awarded the Gilchrist Studentship for 1920 to Mr. O. Keith Struckmeyer, B.A., of Trinity College, Cambridge, who passed first class with distinction in the Italian Tripos at Cambridge in June last. Excerpt from The Teaching of Modern Languages: With Special Reference to Big Towns The subject-matter of this small volume has already formed the substance of three lectures on the Teaching of Modern Languages, delivered during the Lent Term of 1905 at the London School of Economics. The author can only hope that in their revised form they will meet with as kindly a reception from the wider public to which they now appeal as they did from the very sympathetic audience which greeted their first appearance. Excerpt from The Teaching of Modern Foreign Languages: In School and University The Modern Educator's Library has been designed to give considered expositions of the best theory and practice in English education of today. It is planned to cover the principal problems of educational theory in general, of curriculum and organisation, of some unexhausted aspects of the history of education, and of special branches of applied education. The Editor and his colleagues have had in view the needs of young teachers and of those training to be teachers, but since the school and the schoolmaster are not the sole factors in the educative process, it is hoped that educators in general (and which Of us is not in some sense or other an educator?) as well as the professional schoolmaster may find in the series some help in understanding precept and practice in education of to-day and to-morrow. For we have borne in mind not only what is but what ought to be. To exhibit the educator's work as a vocation requiring the best possible preparation is the spirit in which these volumes have been written. Excerpt from How to Teach and Learn Modern Languages Successfully, Especially French, and Its Teaching at School I confess my weakness. I also had deter mined to write a grammar - a grammar that should throw into the shade everything that had been previously achieved - but the sight of the voluminous catalogue disheartened me; in short, it convinced me that success in that line was impossible. I threw my pen away in despair. But, on examining the list of French works once more, an idea occurred to me, whether a good one or no, I leave to others to decide. Finding that books which give practical hints as to the method of teaching modern languages are not to be found in the said catalogue, I determined Upon supplying that want by giving, in the present little volume, my own experience, not only in teaching, but also in learning several languages, and pointing out in this manner, to teachers and students, how to teach, and how to learn modern languages.
