The report discusses the evolutionary developments in mechanistic dowel behaviour theory proposed by Bradbury, Grinter, Friberg, Lessels, Timoshenko, and Westergaard. New findings relating to dowel bar behaviour obtained from finite-element modelling are discussed. A sampling of pavement performance model which use empirical or empirical-mechanistic statistical regressions to estimate load transfer performance (expressed as transverse joint faulting) in terms of material, environmental and traffic variables not considered by theoretical analysis is presented. The findings from a limited number of field performance and laboratory studies are summarised.

Longitudinal joints of concrete pavements constitute essential elements in the overall functionality and performance of the pavement system. The noticeable deterioration of these joints on some of Kansas highways lead to performing a preliminary study in order to determine the severity of the problem and analyze the design and construction issues that might have contributed to the observed damage. Data was collected from 31 sections of interstate highway in the Kansas City, Kansas metropolitan area. Parameters such as the age of the pavement and sealant, accumulated volumes of total and heavy traffic, type of joint, slab length, slab thickness, concrete strength, steel reinforcement, etc. were analyzed in relation to the observed spalling of the longitudinal joints. The variation of these parameters, with the spalling measures presented in this report, was studied.

Addressing the interactions between the different design and construction variables and techniques this book illustrates best practices for constructing economical, long life concrete pavements. The book proceeds in much the same way as a pavement construction project. First, different alternatives for concrete pavement solutions are outlined. The desired performance and behaviour parameters are identified. Next, appropriate materials are outlined and the most suitable concrete proportions determined. The design can be completed, and then the necessary construction steps for translating the design into a durable facility are carried out. Although the focus reflects highways as the most common application, special features of airport, industrial, and light duty pavements are also addressed. Use is made of modeling and performance tools such as HIPERPAV and LTPP to illustrate behavior and performance, along with some case studies. As concrete pavements are more complex than they seem, and the costs of mistakes or of over-design can be high, this is a valuable book for engineers in both the public and private sectors.
