Small electric uninhabited aerial vehicles (UAV) represent a rapidly expanding market requiring optimization in both efficiency and weight; efficiency is critical during cruise or loiter where the vehicle operates at part power for up to 99% of the mission time. Of the four components (battery, motor, propeller, and electronic speed controller (ESC)) of the electric propulsion system used in small UAVs, the ESC has no accepted performance model and almost no published performance data. To collect performance data, instrumentation was developed to measure electrical power in and out of the ESC using the two wattmeter method and current sense resistors; data was collected with a differential simultaneous data acquisition system. Performance of the ESC was measured under different load, commanded throttle, bus voltage, and switching frequency, and it was found that ESC efficiency decreases with increasing torque and decreasing bus voltage and does not vary much with speed and switching frequency. The final instrumentation was limited to low-voltage systems and error propagation calculations indicate a great deal of error at low power measurements; despite these limitations, an understanding of ESC performance appropriate for conceptual design of these systems was obtained.

A FY 2001 Center Director's Discretionary Fund task to develop a test platform for the development, implementation. and evaluation of adaptive and other advanced control techniques for brushless DC (BLDC) motor-driven mechanisms is described. Important applications for BLDC motor-driven mechanisms are the translation of specimens in microgravity experiments and electromechanical actuation of nozzle and fuel valves in propulsion systems. Motor-driven aerocontrol surfaces are also being utilized in developmental X vehicles. The experimental test platform employs a linear translation stage that is mounted vertically and driven by a BLDC motor. Control approaches are implemented on a digital signal processor-based controller for real-time, closed-loop control of the stage carriage position. The goal of the effort is to explore the application of advanced control approaches that can enhance the performance of a motor-driven actuator over the performance obtained using linear control approaches with fixed gains. Adaptive controllers utilizing an exact model knowledge controller and a self-tuning controller are implemented and the control system performance is illustrated through the presentation of experimental results.Gwaltney, D. In this book, modeling and control design of electric motors, namely step motors, brushless DC motors and induction motors, are considered. The book focuses on recent advances on feedback control designs for various types of electric motors, with a slight emphasis on stepper motors. For this purpose, the authors explore modeling of these devices to the extent needed to provide a high-performance controller, but at the same time one amenable to model-based nonlinear designs. The control designs focus primarily on recent robust adaptive nonlinear controllers to attain high performance. It is shown that the adaptive robust nonlinear controller on its own achieves reasonably good performance without requiring the exact knowledge of motor parameters. While carefully tuned classical controllers often achieve required performance in many applications, it is hoped that the advocated robust and adaptive designs will lead to standard universal controllers with minimal need for fine tuning of control parameters.

In recent years, brushless DC motors and controllers have begun an unparalleled triumph in model construction and in all technical fields. This book is intended to show how a brushless motor works. The basic principle is discussed first, before all the key terms such as kV and rpm/V, operating voltage, load and idle current, torque, turns, electrical and mechanical power, losses, efficiency, etc. are explained. A brushless motor can't work without a brushless controller, it requires a three-phase AC voltage. To increase the speed properly, the controller must have information on the rotor position. This can be done by Hall sensors or directly via the motor windings. All that will be taken into account in the book.

: Electric motors is necessary for all most of all practical systems and becoming integral part in everybody life of modern living. It is hard to imagine that there are more than 700million electric motor drive systems of various sizes are operational throughout the world. In the last few years conditions have been changed in adjustable speed drives due to wide spread use of power semiconductor devices with available ratings up to 6000V and 3000A without even connecting series or paralleling the devices. The present competitive development in the solid state devices, control systems and signal processing all over the world result in significant progress in performance of AC drives and decreasing the overall drive cost. In order to meet different practical applications, various types of motors such as synchronous motors, induction motors, DC motors, switched reluctance motors, from several millwatts to millions of kilowatts. The Permanent Magnet Brushless DC (BLDC) motors have been emerged in wide areas of real world applications due to their higher power density, good dynamic performance and ease of control. Further, the motor has high efficiency over a good speed range. In this book simulation of BLDC motor drive and its control is elaborately discussed and is useful for students and faculty members to understand the simulation and control aspect of BLDC motor drive.
