The purpose of this monograph is threefold. First, mathematical models of the transient behavior of some or all of the state variables describing the motion of multiple-link flexible structures will be developed. The structures which we have in mind consist of finitely many interconnected flexible ele ments such as strings, beams, plates and shells or combinations thereof and are representative of trusses, frames, robot arms, solar panels, antennae, deformable mirrors, etc. , currently in use. For example, a typical subsys tem found in almost all aircraft and space vehicles consists of beam, plate and/or shell elements attached to each other in a rigid or flexible manner. Due to limitations on their weights, the elements themselves must be highly flexible, and due to limitations on their initial configuration (i. e. , before de ployment), those aggregates often have to contain several links so that the substructure may be unfolded or telescoped once it is deployed. The point of view we wish to adopt is that in order to understand completely the dynamic response of a complex elastic structure it is not sufficient to con to take into account the sider only its global motion but also necessary flexibility of individual elements and the interaction and transmission of elastic effects such as bending, torsion and axial deformations at junctions where members are connected to each other. The second object of this book is to provide rigorous mathematical analyses of the resulting models.

The book discusses essential topics in industrial and applied mathematics such as image processing with a special focus on medical imaging, biometrics and tomography. Applications of mathematical concepts to areas like national security, homeland security and law enforcement, enterprise and e-government services, personal information and business transactions, and brain-like computers are also highlighted. These contributions – all prepared by respected academicians, scientists and researchers from across the globe – are based on papers presented at the international conference organized on the occasion of the Silver Jubilee of the Indian Society of Industrial and Applied Mathematics (ISIAM) held from 29 to 31 January 2016 at Sharda University, Greater Noida, India. The book will help young scientists and engineers grasp systematic developments in those areas of mathematics that are essential to properly understand challenging contemporary problems.

This book discusses the methods of fighting against noise. It can be regarded as a mathematical view of specific engineering problems with known and new methods of control and estimation in noisy media. From the reviews: "An excellent reference on the complete sets of equations for the optimal controls and for the optimal filters under wide band noises and shifted white noises and their possible application to navigation of spacecraft." --MATHEMATICAL REVIEWS

This book covers the boundary value problems for a wide range of mathematical models of the mechanics of deformable bodies, in particular, the boundary value problems concerning plates and shells, crack theory, and elastoplastic bodies. An essential feature of the discussed boundary value problems is the availability of the inequality type constraints imposed on solutions such as the impenetration condition for contact problems, the yield plasticity condition, etc. As a consequence, the presence of free boundaries is typical of the boundary value problems concerned. The objective of the book is to display some new methods of analyzing such problems, as well as to perform research on new models evolved from engineering practice. Readers will find a variety of new mathematical models describing some contact problems for plates and shells, an equilibrium of plates involving cracks, etc. Furthermore, some new mathematical methods are presented which were specially developed by the authors to study the problems concerned. These help to convey a comprehensive picture of the present state of mathematical problems on the free-boundary elasticity and plasticity theory. The book is intended for postgraduates, scientists and engineers.and for Students interested in problems of modelling and optimal control in the mechanics of deformable bodies.

While domain decomposition methods have a long history dating back well over one hundred years, it is only during the last decade that they have become a major tool in numerical analysis of partial differential equations. This monograph emphasizes domain decomposition methods in the context of so-called virtual optimal control problems and treats optimal control problems for partial differential equations and their decompositions using an all-at-once approach.

The ENUMATH conferences were established in 1995 in order to provide a forum for discussion on recent topics of numerical mathematics. They seek to bring together leading experts and young scientists, with special emphasis on contributions from Europe. In the second ENUMATH conference in 1997, recent results and new trends in the analysis of numerical algorithms as well as their application to challenging scientific and industrial problems were discussed. Apart from theoretical aspects, a major part of the conference was devoted to numerical methods in interdisciplinary applications. The topics covered in this proceedings include: higher order finite element methods, non-matching grids, least-squares methods for partial differential equations, multiscale analysis, boundary element method, optimization in partial differential equations, solid mechanics, microstructures, computational fluid dynamics, computational electrodynamics and semiconductors.
