It is New Year’s Eve when the storm of the century hits northern California. In a quiet neighborhood in San Francisco, amid the chaos of fallen trees and damaged homes, the lives of three strangers are about to collide. For Quinn Thompson, what happens in the storm’s wake will bring down a barrier he has built around himself since his wife’s death. For neighbor Maggie Dartman, it will spark friendship at a time when she needs it most. And for Jack Adams, a carpenter who will repair Quinn’s and Maggie’ s homes, the storm brings an opportunity: to help two people and to be repaid with the greatest gift of all. As three lives come together and a unique friendship is forged, something extraordinary begins to happen…Maggie, still grieving a loss, slowly comes alive again–and Jack finally shares a painful secret he has hidden for years. But at the center of the friendship is Quinn. A man who has scaled heights of success in business, Quinn is now adrift, waiting as builders put the finishing touches on his newest passion, a 180-foot yacht he plans to sail around the world. Looking back at all he missed with his family while he built his empire, Quinn is consumed by guilt, focused only on escaping to the sea. But as his plans near completion, and his friendship with Maggie begins to change, Quinn faces a choice–between a safe haven and an adventure of the heart. The choice he makes will affect other lives as powerfully as his own. And it will take him on an extraordinary journey–and into a second, terrifying storm, one that will bring him danger…or deliverance. Danielle Steel brings us miracles big and small–the kind we are blessed with and those we give to others. With a subtle hand and a flawless touch, she has written a novel that soars with hope, and makes us laugh, cry, and care.

Rosie Flores, 23, a graduate student at the University of New Mexico is returning to her home in Santa Rosita for the summer. She has a problem. Her town is peopled by her xenophobic, but lovable, churchgoing family, the native Americans she grew up with, and radical separatists who allow no "outsiders" (except revenue-producing tourists) to enter their area. Rosie must tell her family members that she is in love with Jon, a doctor who is temporarily working at the town medical clinic. The problem is that Jon is an "outsider," a "gringo," and of a different religion. There is no chance that her family will ever accept him. As one of her friends puts it, Rosie “needs a miracle” to solve her seemingly impossible problem. Her prayers are answered when, after a terrible flood, an object arises from the ground of the old church cemetery. After the object is examined by the town priest, the Elder of the Santa Rosita pueblo and the Alcalde of the town, they receive a stunning surprise that turns the town topsy-turvy; nothing they believe is as it seems. Rosie smiles. What do the people do with this revelation? ARTHUR KORNHABER, MD, psychiatrist, author, and foremost expert on the relationships between the generations frequently appears in the media. He is the author of seven books, six on the topic of grandparenting. During the 1990s, Dr. Kornhaber worked with Native American and Hispanic populations in Northern New Mexico to apply "Grandparent Power," using the influence of Elders to create a modern, culturally-sensitive, mental healthcare system for the young, and to enhance their ability to learn what their local Elders have to teach concerning culture and legacy. During his time there, he became aware of a well-hidden secret. This personal discovery moved him to write his first novel, Rosie's Miracle.

Lon Chaney's "The Miracle Man" is one of the famous "lost" films of the silent movie era. A bold, riveting expose of a phony "faith healer," this film saw the "Man of a Thousand Faces" once again playing a grotesque, pathetic character, yet one the audience can still feel sympathy for. Though a complete print of the original film may be lost forever, the novel it is based on, by Frank L. Packard, lives on. Follow the monstrous lives of old-time criminals and religious frauds in this buried treasure from the past.

Miracle Gold (Vol. 3 of 3) A Novel The reason why the dwarf didn't either take the gold or hand over Timmons to the police was because he hadn't all he wanted. When he got Timmons asleep he left him somewhere and went back to wind his clock just to show he wasn't up to anything. What was it Timmons hadn't? Why, papers, of course. Timmons hadn't any papers about Stamer or any of them, and the only thing Leigh would have against Timmons, if he gave him up then, would be the gold, out of which by itself they could make nothing! That was the whole secret! Leigh knew the time when Timmons would come to his senses to a minute, and had him out in the street half a mile from the house before he knew where he was. If confirmation of this theory were required had not Timmons told him that Leigh carried a silver bottle always with him, and that he was ever sniffing up the contents of the bottle? Might not he carry another bottle the contents of which, when breathed even once, were more powerful, ten times more powerful, than chloroform? This explanation admitted of no doubt or even question. But if a clincher were needed, was it not afforded by what he had heard the landlord and frequenters of the Hanover say last night about this man's clock? They said that when the clock was wound up by night the winding up _always_ took place in the half hour between midnight and half-past twelve, and furthermore that on no occasion but one, and that one when Leigh was out of town, that one and singular occasion being the night before his visit to the Hanover, had a soul but the dwarf been seen in the clock room or admitted to it. This affair must be looked after at once. It admitted of no delay. He would go to the Hanover and early enough to try some of their rum hot, of which he had heard such praises last night. This was the substance of Stamer's thinking, though not the words of his thought. On his way to Chetwynd Street he thought: "He wants to get evidence against Timmons, and he wants to get evidence against _me_ for the police. If he doesn't get it from Timmons pockets next Thursday, he'll get it some other way soon, and then Timmons and I will be locked up. That must be prevented. He is too clever for an honest, straightforward man like Timmons. It isn't right to have a man like that prying into things and disturbing things. It isn't right, and it isn't fair, and it must be stopped, and it shall be stopped soon, or my name isn't Tom Stamer. I may make pretty free in this get-up. It belonged to a broken-down bailiff, and I think I look as like a broken-down bailiff as need be. When Timmons didn't guess who I was, I don't think anyone else will know, even if I met a dozen of the detectives."

In 'The Novel: What It Is,' American writer F. Marion Crawford defended his literary approach, self-conceived as a mixture of romanticism and realism, describing the art form in terms of its marketplace and audience. He stated, "A novel is a marketable commodity, of the class collectively termed "luxuries," as not contributing directly to the support of life or the maintenance of health."

This book contains a multidisciplinary collection of studies on women in miracle stories found in texts ranging from religious classics to contemporary literary fiction. Miracle stories are a genre of great importance for the study of women's religious inheritance and for the historical and cultural understanding of women as 'makers of faith'. Miracle stories are very generally speaking more open to popular religion and culture than, for instance, doctrinal and official ecclesiastical texts, and as such, they can be of special interest to the study of women's lives and religious aspirations. Remarkably, up till now this genre has not been looked at from this point of view. This book aims to open this field for further research by presenting case studies from diverse angles and disciplines. Some of the questions this book tries to answer are: What do miracle stories specifically tell us about women? Are there some (types of) miracles that are in particular related to (certain groups of) women? What do these stories tell us about women as performers and/or subjects of miracles? What can be said about the social function and religious meaning of miracles by specifically looking at the way certain groups of women are practising and experiencing miracles? By including research on miracle stories in contemporary fiction written by women this book also wants to acknowledge and research the disputed status of 'miracles' as well of 'women' in our present society which is moving from modernity to post-modernity. Please note that Women and Miracle Stories is previously published by Brill in hardback (ISBN 90 04 16681 8, still available).
