Excerpt from Minutes of the Seventy-First Session of the State Convention of the Baptist Denomination in South Carolina: Held With the First Baptist Church of Spartanburg, December 3-6, 1891 In the month of February death invaded the ranks of our noble band of workers. Rev. J. S. West, like a brave soldier, died' at his post. He was a good man and a faithful, efficient missionary. He rests from his labors and his works do follow him. The past year has been a very important one in our history. Twenty new fields were entered, and more laborers employed. Than ever before. The prosperity that has attended the work in the years gone by has continued to crown the labors of this year, and the growth in many fields has been large and prominent. It has been a year characterized not only by the seed sown and the foundations laid, but also by the fruits gathered. We venture to say that the Board never accomplished so large and so successful a work in any year of its history, as in the year which closes to-day. Excerpt from Minutes of the Seventy-Ninth Annual Session of the State Convention of the Baptist Denomination in South Carolina: Held With the First Baptist Church, Gaffney, S. C., November 29-December 3, 1899 An alarming danger threatens not only the Baptists of South Carolina but all other Christians as well. Mormon missionaries are canvassing our State, going from house to house, two by two, scattering widely their cunningly devised literature, establishing preaching points, and slowly but surely planting an influence that will develop into the most threatening foe to the peace of society, the progress of vital godliness, and the prosperity of our Christian institutions. They already claim to have members in the State. To counteract the influence of these. False teachers, we have already scattered over the State pages of tracts and pamphlets. In addition to this we must send out more missionaries to those sections of the State where the people are most easily influenced by them. Where they preach error, let our missionaries preach the truth. This is the only successful way to meet them.
