Much has been written about Millennials, but until now their growing presence in the field of architecture has not been examined in-depth. In an era of significant challenges stemming from explosive population growth, climate change, and the density of cities, Millennials in Architecture embraces the digitally savvy disruptors who are joining the field at a crucial time, as it grapples with the best ways to respond to a changing physical world. Taking a clear-eyed look at the new generation in the context of the design professions, Darius Sollohub begins by situating Millennials in a line of generations stretching back to early Modernism, exploring how each generation negotiates the ones before and after. He then considers the present moment, closely evaluating the significance of Millennial behaviors and characteristics (from civic-mindedness to collaboration, and time management in a 24/7 culture), all underpinned by fluency in the digital world. The book concludes with an assessment of the profound changes and opportunities that Millennial disruption will bring to education, licensure, and firm management. Encouraging new alliances, Millennials in Architecture is an essential resource for the architectural community and its stakeholders.

Millennials or Generation Y (those born between the 1980s and 2000s) are the demographic cohort also known as the Peter Pan generation. They are relocating from the nursery – the safe haven of living at home with mum and dad - much later in life than previous generations, but are being propelled into a world of reality, responsibilities and experiences shaped by the information revolution. ‘Searching for Neverland: Architecture of the Millennial Generation’ embodies a close reading of the millennials and J.M. Barrie’s famous novel, Peter and Wendy, to establish a new Neverland in the context of a modern millennial world. The Peter Pan narrative depicts the conflict between the innocence of childhood and the responsibility of growing up and facing adulthood – a conflict echoed in today’s society. In the novel, the coming of Peter Pan disrupted the lives of Wendy and her brothers through their journey to Neverland and subsequent adventures, while today, the coming of the internet, the growth of social media and globalisation have disrupted the lives of millennials. As a generation predicted to hold contrasting traits including open-mindedness, confidence and tolerance versus narcissism and entitled tendencies, this thesis interrogates who the millennials are and how they experience architecture, predominately through technology and social media. The vehicle for investigating these ideas are, architectural provocations that critique the life and traits of the millennial generation and unveiled in London’s Kensington Garden – a theme park where the statue of Peter Pan welcomes all visitors, inviting them to step through the window into the Millennial Neverland. The park negotiates the kaleidoscopic map of life in an ever-changing world unknown to previous generations. Feeding on the experience of the Peter Pan generation’s existence, the Millennial Neverland proposes a variety of rides and entertainment attractions. Through the manifestation of a Millennial Neverland, this thesis argues that millennials as a cohort experience architecture and life in rather different ways to their baby boomer parents. Their comprehension of growing up with rapidly advancing knowledge, amplified by engagement and competency in technology, provides new understanding of world experiences that shape their perceptions.

This book seeks to improve the work lives of architects of diverse demographics who do not fit, or want to replicate, the traditional ‘24/7’ white-male architect lifestyle. Aimed at a workforce whose life and career expectations have changed drastically in recent years, it helps readers of different generations to make informed choices about their careers – enabling students, educators, and professionals to prioritise wellbeing and offer their design and practice voice to enhance a built environment for all. Work-Life Balance in Architecture examines what it means to play the ‘game of architecture’ – to choose to study and pursue a career in architecture rather than another profession. The book shows the economic, social, and professional structures within which architectural education and practice operate and reveals the impact of a corporate, neoliberal ‘big business’ mentality on wellbeing. After setting out the context exacerbating work-life imbalance, the book discusses the paths an architect may take – whether this leads to a career in practice or not in architecture at all – and how alternative gameplay moves can advantage or disadvantage those of different gender, class, ethnicity, race, or age at different career stages. It concludes by examining how the places in which an architect works, the time available to work and critiques of perpetual neoliberal economic growth can enhance the lives of all architects today.

A deep strain of tribal politics is dividing societies around the globe. Organized religions are also coping with scandals, disappointments, and polarizing ideologies. The history of Christianity reveals that such frictions deeply wound the church. Fr. Richard S. Vosko recognizes that liturgical buildings are metaphorical expressions of the people of God. He proposes, in a relational way, that when all physical and psychological boundaries in a place of worship are removed people will discover a common ground. Building on theological foundations and design principles, Vosko envisions what an egalitarian “servant church” can look like. In a bold but thoughtful manner, he presents progressive insights into the fields of church art and architecture.

This thesis examines home-making needs and particularities of today's young people. It has developed from an interest in human behaviourology in architecture and aspires to address housing needs and desires through contextual interrogations between behavioural studies and housing choice, as well as contemplating the making of 'place' and 'home'. It is acknowledged that undertaking a generational study is not without its significant challenges. A large majority of knowledge comes from literature rather than first-hand accounts; furthermore, the insight surrounding this generation is multi-determined. Accepting the considerable diversity of this cohort, this thesis, therefore is an effort to provide a contemporary perspective on the noticeably large movement of young people to urban areas and centres. How the millennials choose to exert their growing distinctive lifestyles will have both implications and opportunities for architecture and the contemporary city. Thus, key questions must be: What housing form and design considerations will best align with the specific needs and desires of the millennials? How can architecture mediate the interstice between transitional accommodation and home ownership through an identifiable 'home'? This thesis seeks to address these questions by critiquing the millennial generation's home-making in the 21st century city. The objective has been to investigate the concepts and social ideals that underpin housing aspirations associated with this generation. How intrinsic needs and desires as well as external influences have shaped their housing identities are explored to navigate towards a more personalised way of living. The discussion ranges from the radical socialist ideals propagated by the Soviet Union in the 1920s and 30s, to the community-focused settlements and neighbourhoods of the latter decades of the 20th century. From these models, the desire of this thesis is to demonstrate through a design methodology how best to respond to the specific needs and preferences of the millennial generation.

'Young-Old' examines contemporary architectural and urban mutations that have emerged as a consequence of one of the key demographic transformations of our time: population aging. Distinguishing between different phases of old age, it identifies the group known as the "Young-Old" as a remarkable petri dish for experimental forms of subjectivity, collectivity, and environment. In investigating this field of latent urban and architectural novelty, 'Young-Old' asserts both the escapist and emancipatory dimensions of these practices. Richly illustrated with drawings, maps, and photographs, the volume documents phenomena ranging from the continuous, golf cart accessible urban landscapes of the world's largest retirement community in Florida and the mono-national urbanizaciones of "the retirement home of Europe" on Costa del Sol, to the Dutch-themed residential community at Huis Ten Bosch in the south of Japan. AUTHOR: Deane Simpson is an architect and urbanist teaching at the Royal Danish Academy School of Architecture Copenhagen and at BAS Bergen, where he is professor of architecture and urbanism. 250 illustrations
