September 1962. School is out, the weather is perfect, and Leo Stevenson just got a new washer and dryer. For young Mil Silver and his friends, this can only mean one thing: an exciting afternoon of box-carting! "Beneath him, Mil could feel the warm, squirming bodies of the other boys; their hot breath making the inside of the box even more stuffy and unpleasant.but before he could think of an excuse to bail out, he heard Sherry yell 'Bombs away!' .within seconds, the box was cart-wheeling down the hill like a shoe kicked down a flight of steps!" Imagine stuffing five boys in a cardboard carton and rolling it down the side of a mountain! Far-fetched as it sounds, this is only one example of the crazy things kids did in an era previous to video games, DVD's and MP3 players. Life was simple and children created their own fun. But things weren't always swell. When a race with his prized puries at stake goes dangerously wrong, Mil suddenly finds he has a lot more to worry about than just losing his marbles! Principal Bratton is furious and Mil's war with Belinda is about to get ugly!

When strangers of questionable character begin prowling the rural town of Redstone, Utah, and its surrounding area, suspicions are raised and rumors begin to fly. To Mil Silver and his pals, this invasion of their sleepy little community can mean only one thing: The legends of Moroni's Cave and the treasure it contains are true—and Mil's band of adventurers must act fast to prevent the bad guys from taking what is rightfully theirs. Set in the summer of 1964, Mil Silver & the Legend of Moroni's Cave is a work of historical fiction based on actual legends that are still repeated in parts of Southern Utah today. While the main plot hinges on Mil Silver's quest to unravel the mystery of Moroni's Cave and claim its treasure, the subplot explores the strained relationship between an adopted son and his widowed mother. Unable to cope with the death of his father, Nicholas Rush, age 17, rebels and leaves California in the company of a care-free hippy named Forrest Gold. Together the two travel to Utah to “enjoy the nature” but both have ulterior motives. Determined to achieve their respective objectives, Mil and Nick cross paths in dramatic fashion and their priorities suddenly change. In the end, both young men discover a treasure far more valuable than gold.
