A new immobilization method for the localized adsorption of proteins on thermoplastic surfaces is introduced. Artificial three-phase interfaces were realized by surface structuring to control the wetting behavior which lead to a preferred adsorption in these modified areas. Additionally, different fabrication methods were analyzed to determine mass fabrication capabilities. These fabrication methods also allowed the production of fully structured microchannels to tune the fluids behavior within.

With 30 years of driving Lean transformations under his belt—both in-house at Danaher and as the founder of Lean Horizons—Mark C. DeLuzio has a vantage point across a variety of industries. He often hears the challenges Lean leaders face now that they’ve been implementing Lean for a decade or more. They are concerned that they aren’t getting the results they used to, and they don’t know why. Most leaders believe their problems are unique to their company, but Mark sees more commonalities than differences. Flatlined: Why Lean Transformations Fail and What to Do About It draws on the author’s experience as the original pioneer of the most successful Lean business system next to Toyota, as well as his progress over the past 18 years in helping companies replicate what Danaher achieved. Mark DeLuzio knows you need an actionable approach to make rapid shifts, not theory. With this book, Mark DeLuzio gives you: • the reasons why companies are now flatlining with Lean; • five steps to solving this problem, no matter what your industry or corporate culture; • real talk on why your organization is probably mediocre (even if it’s making a lot of money) and how to disrupt it to make it genuinely world class; • the questions you should always be asking at every stage and level of your Lean initiative.

The second edition of Hot Embossing: Theory of Microreplication will present the current state of the art in microreplication with a focus on hot embossing, nanoimprint, thermoforming, and roll-to-roll replication. Polymer processing, the theory of polymers and the processing of polymers are discussed in detail. Aspects of process simulation and the corresponding material models are also covered. The book contains in-depth analysis of processing processes and replication techniques including mold fabrication. Monitoring, data analysis and reliability of molded parts is also discussed. In the Second Edition new processes are included, including the process of micro- and nanothermoforming to generate 3D structures and the hot pulling processes to generate hierarchical structures with high aspect ratios. Based on hot pulling, “Nanofur for Oil-water-separation is a large-scale biomimetic application. Upscaling, especially the seamless roll-to-roll replication, is also explored. The book is designed to cover the entire workflow for a seamless lithographic sleeve. This new edition marks a substantial update of the previous edition, incorporating several new chapters. It is an important resource for materials scientists and engineers working in the areas of micro- and nanofabrication. Comprehensively updated to include new techniques, processes, and variables that have come to prominence in recent years Includes new chapters that address monitoring, properties of molded parts, 3D thermoforming, hot pulling, functional materials, smart surfaces, and upscaling by roll-2-roll Discusses the entire microreplication process, from theory and processes to technology and mold to surface-oriented applications

This work offers three solutions tailored to specific applications to overcome NMR challenges in the micro-domain. As the first sub-topic of this work, different potential electrode designs, compatible with NMR technique, are suggested and experimentally evaluated. As the second focus point, this work tackles multinuclear detection challenges. In parallel, a low-cost, broadband insert is discussed to enhance the sensitivity of standard NMR coils when a small sample volume is available.

Inspired by superhydrophobic leaves of water plants, a flexible superhydrophobic self-cleaning, transparent thin polymeric nanofur film was fabricated through highly scalable hot embossing and hot pulling techniques. Nanofur can retain an air film underwater, whose stability against external stimuli such as high pressure and movement through fluids is investigated. Additionally, the optical properties of nanofur are investigated and exploited to enhance the efficiency of optoelectronic devices.

Conventional MRI has several limitations such as long scan durations, motion artifacts, very loud acoustic noise, signal loss due to short relaxation times, and RF induced heating of electrically conducting objects. The goals of this work are to evaluate and improve the state-of-the-art methods for MRI of tissue with short T?, to prove the feasibility of in vivo Concurrent Excitation and Acquisition, and to introduce simultaneous electroglottography measurement during functional lung MRI.

Elastocaloric cooling is an emerging solid-state cooling technology with the potential to provide environmentally friendly, efficient cooling. The elastocaloric effect in superelastic shape memory alloy films is used to develop advanced cooling devices for small-scale applications. Cascaded and parallelized devices are developed to increase device temperature span and cooling capacity. The concepts are proven experimentally, a maximum temperature span of 27° C is achieved in a cascaded device.

This work deals with the process of photon upconversion in surface-anchored metal-organic frameworks. During the upconversion, two low-energy photons are absorbed and fused into a higher-energy photon, which is emitted. In this work, this process is analyzed in surface-bound metal-organic frameworks by spectroscopic methods. Furthermore, the application for increasing the efficiency of solar cells is discussed.
