Oaxaca is known for many things--its indigenous groups, archaeological sites, crafts, and textiles--but not for mental health care. When one talks with Oaxacans about mental health, most say it's a taboo topic and that people there think you "have to be crazy to go to a psychologist." Yet throughout Oaxaca are signs advertising the services of psicólogos; there are prominent conferences of mental health professionals; and self-help groups like Neurotics Anonymous thrive, where participants rise to say, "Hola, mi nombre es Raquel, y soy neurótica." How does one explain the recent growth of Euroamerican-style therapies in the region? Author Whitney L. Duncan analyzes this phenomenon of "psy-globalization" and develops a rich ethnography of its effects on Oaxacans' understandings of themselves and their emotions, ultimately showing how globalizing forms of care are transformative for and transformed by the local context. She also delves into the mental health impacts of migration from Mexico to the United States, both for migrants who return and for the family members they leave behind. This book is a recipient of the Norman L. and Roselea J. Goldberg Prize from Vanderbilt University Press for the best book in the area of medicine.

Norms, Realities and Lies is a poetry collection that explores some current social, religious and personal issues in verse. It is a call for the recognition of the oppression of social norms and religious dogmas on the individual. The author stresses emphasis on individualism and spiritualism as factors that can truly free humanity to live a happier life. Furthermore, it confronts stereotypes that are based on weight, height, physical attraction, language and culture just to name a few. Norms, Realities and Lies overtly points out how most of us have preconceived notions of others based on some imaginary measure of human worth that uses physical appearance as its foundation without actually getting to personally know an individual. The importance of the recognition of each matchless individual as a cure for prejudice is also evident. Dr. Rodriguez maintains the same precision and beauty in Norms, Realities and Lies as he does in all of his previous seven poetry collections. Juan Antonio Rodriguez (BA, MA, Ph.D.) was born in the Dominican Republic and was raised in New York City. He has written six academic books on English instruction and seven collections of poetry, five in Spanish and two in English. One of his books won an international sonnet prize (El Premio Internacional El Eria de Sonetos, 2003) in Spain.

Inspired by Alistair Cooke’s masterpiece “Letter from America” (1934-2004) that depicted the transformation of British culture in the United States of America, Ndi-Shang’s text redefines ‘America’, focusing on the melting pot engendered by African, indigenous, European and Asian cultures in Latin America through the case of Peru, the erstwhile epicentre of Spanish empire in Latin America. It is a reflection on the triangular relationship between Africa, Europe and America against the backdrop of slavery and (neo-)colonialism which continue to define intimate experiences, daily interactions, personal trajectories and human relations in a ‘globalized world’. Ndi-Shang probes into the legacies of racial inequalities but also the possibilities of a new ethic of encounter amongst human beings/cultures. The text is based on an intricate interweaving of the humorous with the tragic, the personal with the global, the historical with the current and the real with the creative.

This volume addresses processes of human mobility in times of crisis from different scientific perspectives and at a global and trans-regional level. The first part sets out to discuss established paradigms in migration studies and politics in order to suggest new approaches to analyse mobility, migration and to challenge boundary making approaches. The second part presents empirical cases from Latin America and Spain to demonstrate how migrants challenge, negotiate and mobilize citizenship and belonging. The third part deals with the question how belonging is produced and identity is constructed at a transnational level. New information and communication technologies, human mobility but also the mobility of concepts, ideas and values foster these collectivization processes across and within physical and symbolic borders.
