This publication was made possible through a bequest from my beloved late wife. United together in this present collection are those works by the author which have not previously appeared in book form. The following are excepted: Vorlesungen tiber Differential und Integralrechnung (Lectures on Differential and Integral Calculus) Vols 1-3, Birkhiiuser Verlag, Basel (1965-1968); Aufgabensammlung zur Infinitesimalrechnung (Exercises in Infinitesimal Calculus) Vols 1, 2a, 2b, and 3, Birkhiiuser Verlag, Basel (1967-1977); two issues from Memorial des Sciences on Conformal Mapping (written together with C. Gattegno), Gauthier-Villars, Paris (1949); Solution of Equations in Euclidean and Banach Spaces, Academic Press, New York (1973); and Stu dien tiber den Schottkyschen Satz (Studies on Schottky's Theorem), Wepf & Co., Basel (1931). Where corrections have had to be implemented in the text of certain papers, references to these are made at the conclusion of each paper. In the few instances where this system does not, for technical reasons, seem appropriate, an asterisk in the page margin indicates wherever a correction is necessary and this is then given at the end of the paper. (There is one exception: the correc tions to the paper on page 561 are presented on page 722. The works are published in 6 volumes and are arranged under 16 topic headings. Within each heading, the papers are ordered chronologically according to the date of original publication.

L. COLLATZ, G. MEINARDUS, H. The projectors are considered as simple but important type of matrices and operators. Their basic theory can be found in many books, among which Hal mas [177], [178] are of particular significance. The projectors or projections became an active research area in the last two decades due to ideas generated from linear algebra, statistics and various areas of algorithmic mathematics. There has also grown up a great and increasing number of projection meth ods for different purposes. The aim of this book is to give a unified survey on projectors and projection methods including the most recent results. The words projector, projection and idempotent are used as synonyms, although the word projection is more common. We assume that the reader is familiar with linear algebra and mathemati cal analysis at a bachelor level. The first chapter includes supplements from linear algebra and matrix analysis that are not incorporated in the standard courses. The second and the last chapter include the theory of projectors. Four chapters are devoted to projection methods for solving linear and non linear systems of algebraic equations and convex optimization problems.

Introduction to Numerical Analysis

This book is based on a one-year introductory course on numerical analysis given by the authors at several universities in Germany and the United States. The authors concentrate on methods which can be worked out on a digital computer. For important topics, algorithmic descriptions (given more or less formally in ALGOL 60), as well as thorough but concise treatments of their theoretical founda tions, are provided. Where several methods for solving a problem are presented, comparisons of their applicability and limitations are offered. Each comparison is based on operation counts, theoretical properties such as convergence rates, and, more importantly, the intrinsic numerical properties that account for the reliability or unreliability of an algorithm. Within this context, the introductory chapter on error analysis plays a special role because it precisely describes basic concepts, such as the numerical stability of algorithms, that are indispensable in the thorough treatment of numerical questions. The remaining seven chapters are devoted to describing numerical methods in various contexts. In addition to covering standard topics, these chapters encom pass some special subjects not usually found in introductions to numerical analysis. Chapter 2, which discusses interpolation, gives an account of modem fast Fourier transform methods. In Chapter 3, extrapolation techniques for spe~d ing up the convergence of discretization methods in connection with Romberg integration are explained at length.
