Excerpt from Memorials of the Society of the Cincinnati of Massachusetts The memoir of General Knox has assumed larg proportions than was originally intended, partly b cause of the importance of the subject, and part from the abundance of the materials furnished 1 his grandson. The worthy President of the Societ Another no less important reason is that no bio raphy of that distinguished man has hitherto be published; and it has seemed but just, therefore, th the Society which he founded should recognize this manner their Obligation to his memory. Should be borne in mind in reading Knox's lette that the greater part of them exist only in the orig nal rough drafts, and hence occasional inaccuraci and ungrammatical expressions will be noticed, whit the letters themselves would probably not contain. Excerpt from Memorials of the Massachusetts Society of the Cincinnati In this connection it is proper to state that the portrait of Mr. Cobb, President of the Massachusetts Society, was furnished upon the special request of the Standing Committee; and that the portrait of Mr. Fish, President of the General Society, was furnished upon the request of the Publication Committee. A statement in regard to the discrepancies in the various lists of original members which have been printed from time to time, will be found in the Appen dix. It appears that the autograph list of original members contains the names of three hundred and twenty commissioned officers, of whom seventeen did not contribute their month's pay to the principal fund. That this book shall contain a list of all the members of the Society, and a statement of their title by inheritance." Committee on Publication. Prof. Edward Graham Daves, Chairman. Hon. William Benning Webb, Wilson Cary McHenry, Esq. At the meeting of February 22d, 1894, it was reported that all the material for the Register had been collected. On August 1st, 1894, Professor Daves died in Boston, where he was at work on the historical sketch of the "Society of the Cincinnati," which, though evidently not completed, the Committee deemed best to publish as it was found. By the death of Professor Daves the Committee sustained a severe loss. Mr. Webb succeeded Professor Daves as Chairman on February 22d, 1895. Hon. Oswald Tilghman and John C. Daves, Esq., were appointed to fill the vacancies, Mr. McHenry having resigned. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
