Excerpt from Memorial Volume The writer of this brief sketch of General Moorhead's long and well rounded life claims nothing more than to have compiled a continuous and connected narrative from different sources at his command. The sketch has not been made as long and full as it might easily have been, because of the accompanying papers, addresses, resolutions, letters, etc., which set forth the life and character of the General from different standpoints, and as seen by different individuals. The estimate of his character, as given by any one person, is almost valueless as compared with that oneness of Opinion, that harmony of sentiment, that agree ment of judgment that may be discerned in all these various utterances that come from so many different sources. Excerpt from Tales, Sketches and Poems: A Memorial Volume To all of us she is a most tender memory; and although the pleasure of reading this book will be sad dened by the recollection that I have lost her who wrote it, it will now and then serve to put me in mind of her as I knew her in the sunshine of that life, upon whose brightness the night of death came all too soon. Excerpt from Dudley Memorial Volume Professor Dudley and I belonged to the class of 1874 in Cornell, we had some of the same studies, we belonged to the same fraternity, and as students we had about the same ups and downs. Aside from these mutual interests we were thrown together still more by the fact that Dudley, being a student in the scientific course, had botany in the early part of 1115 studies, while I in the course in Greek and Latin took botany near the end Of my college work, and SO it came about that in our senior year he was instructor in botany and I was his pupil. As enthusiastic students and as intimate friends we tramped together every hill, explored every gorge and penetrated every swamp for many miles around Ithaca. Under his guidance I came to have a personal acquaintance with and affection for every flowering plant of the region about Cayuga Lake, and for Dudley always. A deeper love and a greater esteem. Excerpt from The John Keats Memorial Volume The sum of money eventually realized was not equal to the anticipa tions of the Committee, but there were many reasons to account for this difficulty, and the letters which reached the Committee from various persons were of so definite a nature that it was felt that, even though the necessary funds had not been received, it was desirable that the purchase should be made. Eventually, after getting the option extended on more than one occasion, and receiving the promise of a handsome donation from the life tenant of the property, five members of the Committee came forward and agreed to guarantee any overdraft from the bank in order that the purchase might be completed. Out of the first funds a considerable deposit had already been paid down in order to clench the bargain. The remainder of the money was then advanced, and the property passed into the hands of the Guarantors, who agreed to hold it till the balance of the purchase money had been secured. It will then be transferred to the Corporation of Hampstead to hold in perpetuity on behalf of the nation. The British Academy meantime had taken up the scheme with acclamation. Excerpt from The Church of the Covenant: A Memorial Volume This little volume has been prepared for the use of the members of the Church of the Covenant, and their friends and well-wishers, at the request of the Ladies' Sewing Society of the Church, who desired it for their annual sale. The proceeds of its sale, as of the articles prepared by the industry of the ladies themselves, will be appropriated to the build ing fund of the Church. It preserves in convenient shape, the history of the organization and first year's work of the Church of the Covenant. It will, with God's permission, be followed in successive years by similar records, which can be bound up with them in one volume. The contents of these pages will awaken many tender memories in the first friends and organizers of the Church. May they serve as a new bond of union, to draw us near to each other, and to deepen our devotion to the sacred cause in wln'ch we have embarked together!
