In May, 1833, he was admitted to the bar by the Supreme Court of Indiana with the privilege oi practicing in all the courts of the State, and a few weeks later made a location in Fort Wayne, Indiana, opening a law office. He served as Judge of the Court of Com mon Pleas for a short time, and was rapidly winning a high reputation as a jurist when he entered another field of labor. He did not, however, abandon the legal profession, expecting to return to it, and had he done so, such were his abilities, that he would undoubtedly have gained a place in the front ranks among the finest legal minds of the nation.
