Excerpt from Memorials, and Other Papers, Vol. 1 of 2 These papers I am anxious to put into the hands Of your house, and, so far as regards the U. S., Of your house exclusively; not with any view to fur ther emolument, but as an acknowledgment Of the services which you have already rendered me; namely, first, in having brought together SO widely scattered a collection - a difficulty which in my own hands by too painful an experience I had found from nervous depression to be absolutely insur mountable; secondly, in having made me a partici pator in the pecuniary profits of the American edition, without solicitation or the Shadow Of any expectation on my part, without any legal claim that I could plead, or equitable warrant in estab lished usage, solely and merely upon your own spontaneous motion. Some Of these new papers, I hope, will not be without their value in the eyes Of those who have taken an interest in the original series. But at all events, good or bad, they are now tendered to the appropriation of your individual house, the Messrs. Ticknor fields, according to the amplest extent of any power to make such a transfer that I may be found to possess by law or custom in America. Excerpt from Memorial As you may have seen by the newspapers, I am about to raise a Coloured Regiment in Massachusetts. This I cannot but regard as perhaps the most important corps to be organized during the whole war, in view of what must be the composition of our new levies, and, therefore, I am very anxious to organize it judiciously in order that it may be a model for all future Coloured Regi ments. Excerpt from Memorials, and Other Papers, Vol. 2 of 2 This was news which, in bringing a respite of florty-eight hours, brought relief to some who had feared that even this very night might present them with the spectacle of their beloved hiende engaged in a bloody struggle at the very gates of Kloster heim; for it was the fixed resolution of the Land grave to sufl'er no diminution of his own military strength, or of the means for recruiting it hereafter. Men, horses, arms, all alike were rigorously laid under embargo by the existing government of the city. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Memorial Volume The writer of this brief sketch of General Moorhead's long and well rounded life claims nothing more than to have compiled a continuous and connected narrative from different sources at his command. The sketch has not been made as long and full as it might easily have been, because of the accompanying papers, addresses, resolutions, letters, etc., which set forth the life and character of the General from different standpoints, and as seen by different individuals. The estimate of his character, as given by any one person, is almost valueless as compared with that oneness of Opinion, that harmony of sentiment, that agree ment of judgment that may be discerned in all these various utterances that come from so many different sources. Excerpt from Memorials and Letters The truth and justice of History called for this compilation of Memorials and original Letters relating to the Viscount of Dundee and his troubled times. The undertaking, greatly provoked by the domineering anathemas of Lord Macaulay against the champion of James the Seventh, has been chiefly encouraged by the frank liberality of His Grace of Buccleuch, in affording unlimited access to that voluminous and valuable, but hitherto unexplored repertory of latent history, the Queensberry Papers. The principal object of these Memorials is to redeem the history of Scotland from the vulgar calumny implied in the general recognition that mythical bete noir, "Bloody Clavers." By the light of these family papers may be read a character of Graham of Claver-house very different from what has hitherto obtained, even with those who, however incredulous as to its diabolical phase, have contented themselves with striving to bespeak admiration for the heroism of his enterprize, and the devotion of his loyalty. Pre-eminent among such stands Sir Walter Scott. To him the Queensberry Papers, with which he appears to have been unacquainted, notwithstanding his intimacy with the House of Buccleuch and Queensberry, would have opened up new views of a subject he delighted to handle, and which his genius rendered so attractive. Is the absence of that information to be regretted? About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
