Excerpt from Memoirs of the Life and Correspondence of Henry Reeve, C. B., D. C. L, Vol. 2 of 2 How far the murderous attempt of Orsini, on January 14th, 1858, was connected with the political relations of France and Italy it is as yet impossible to say. It was, and still is, very commonly believed that in his youth Louis Napoleon had been affiliated to one or other of the secret societies of Italy, that he was still pledged to this, was bound to obey its orders; and that Orsini was an agent to remind him that the attainment of high rank, far from releasing him from the bond, rendered it more stringent, as giving him greater power and facility for carrying out the orders he received. The independence Of Italy was aimed at; and it had been intimated to the Emperor that Orsini's was only the first of similar messages which, if action was not taken, would be followed by a second, with greater care to ensure its delivery. Excerpt from Memoirs of the Life and Correspondence of Henry Reeve, C. B., D. C. L, Vol. 1 of 2 To Reeve, young, clever, and aspiring, nothing could be more wholesome than the freedom of this society; and the influence of his early initiation in the world of Paris is strongly marked throughout his whole career. When after wards settled in London as a Government servant and a knight of the pen, his youthful training, his intimacy with the leaders of Parisian thought and Parisian manners, and his perfect knowledge of the language, all tended to push him into an exceptional position, both socially and politi cally, while his acquaintance with many out-of - the-way subjects of study - Bohemian and Polish history, for instance - left him in readiness to take advantage of any exceptional opportunity. It was thus that his services came to be used by premiers and presidents of the Council in unofficial embassies, with the idea, perhaps, that the soft answer which turneth away wrath could sometimes be better con veyed, in the first instance, by a personal friend who was known to be in the confidence of ministers, and yet without any laws standi. This is what I have endeavoured to bring into prominence in the following pages, the form of which has necessarily been shaped by the nature of the materials with which I had to work. Excerpt from The Letters of Henry James, Vol. 2 The much-debated visit to America took lace at last in 1904, and in ten very full months James secured that renewed saturation in can experience which he desired before it should be too late for his advantage. He saw far more of his country in these months than he had_ ever seen in old days. He went with the definite purpose of writing a book of impressions, and these were to be principally the impressions of a restored absentee, reviving the sunken and overlaid mem ories of his youth. But his memories were practi cally of New York, Newport and Boston only; to the country beyond he came for the most part as a complete stranger; and his voyage of new dis covery proved of an interest as great as that which he found in revisiting ancient haunts. The Ameri can Scene, rather than the letters he was able to write in the midst of such a stir of movement, gives his account of the adventure. On the spot the daily assault of sensation, besetting him wherever he turned, was too insistent for deliberate report he quickly saw that his book would have to be postponed for calmer hours at home; and his let. Excerpt from Diary, Reminiscences, and Correspondence of Henry Crabb Robinson, Barrister-at-Law, F. S. A, Vol. 1 of 2 Mr. Robinson was a voracious devourer of books. He read before he got up, and after he went to bed On his journeys, whether on foot or on a stage-coach, he was in the habit of spending much of his time in reading. The most attractive scenery had to share his attention with a book. He said: I could have no pleasure at the seaside without society. That is the one great want of my life. Excerpt from The Life and Correspondence, Vol. 2 of 2: John Foster Mr. Foster's mental structure and habits obviously led him rather to be meditative observer of human life and character, than to engage with ardour in practical concerns. Technical punctilios, and formalities were his aversion; and it costs no effort to believe, that "he never had the least curiosity to inquire into the official affairs of societies and committees." In one important instance, however, he was not satisfied with being a "quiet looker-on," but maintained a course of strenuous exertion on behalf of what he deemed to be a meritorious cause, when he saw it exposed to desertion and obloquy.
