Some few particulars have likewise been published regard ing the personal history of the painter; yet it has not seemed to me superfluous to add one more tribute to the memory of a man whose mind and character were as remarkable as his works are cele brated. Impelled by a tender and respectful regret for his loss, I propose to throw together, in a connected form, such incidents and particulars as I have been enabled to collect, relating to the life of Ary Scheffer, in the persuasion that they will offer to his friends and admirers a welcome addition to the Sketches which have already appeared: sketches which, taking them in a biographical point of View, certainly leave some thing to be desired.
