All the pieces are transcribed from performances of the greatest traditional fiddlers of the past and present including Benny Thomasson, Howdy Forrester, J. T. Perkins, Lloyd Wanzer, Jay Ungar, Vivian Williams, Skip Gorman, Texas Shorty, Kenny Baker, and dozens more. Bowings and chord accompaniment are included. This book will also be of value to students of classical music and Suzuki trained children. Teachers, are you looking for short pieces that will solidify scales yet won't bore your students? This book was written to be used as a learning tool for beginners who read music. It presents very easy tunes to learn the basics of bowing and style, and progresses in difficulty with each tune. All of the arrangements are renditions that the author plays and has heard other fiddlers play. Many of the tunes are done in the style of Herman Johnson, a five-time National Fiddle Champion.

Appalachian fiddle music, based on the musical traditions of the people who settled in the mountainous regions of the southeastern United States, is widely-known and played throughout North America and parts of Europe because of its complex rhythms, its catchy melodies, and its often-ancient-sounding stylistic qualities. The authors explore the lives and music of 43 of the classic Appalachian fiddlers who were active during the first half of the 20th century. Some of them were recorded commercially in the 1920s, such as Gid Tanner, Fiddlin’ John Carson, and Charlie Bowman. Some were recorded by folklorists from the Library of Congress, such as William Stepp, Emmett Lundy, and Marion Reece. Others were recorded informally by family members and visitors, such as John Salyer, Emma Lee Dickerson, and Manco Sneed. All of them played throughout most of their lives and influenced the growth and stylistic elements of fiddle music in their regions. Each fiddler has been given a chapter with a biography, several tune transcriptions, and tune histories. To show the richness of the music, the authors make a special effort to show the musical elements in detail, but also acknowledge that nothing can take the place of listening. Many of the classic recordings used in this book can be found on the web, allowing you to hear and read the music together.

This book is written to accomplish three purposes: (1) to teach music theory and scales as applied to fiddle tunes in the American and Celtic traditions; (2) to teach fiddle improvisation; and (3) to present additional material to help the fiddler who wants to play in other popular styles. Addresses major, minor and blues scales, diminished chords and more. Useful to any instrumentalist, this is not just another collection of licks, nor is it a book of transcriptions. This book teaches the theoretical framework of fiddle tunes and of fiddle soloing; the scales and arpeggios that fiddlers actually use, whether they know it or not. If you improvise or play variations on tunes now, this book will help you understand what works and why.

Each of the fiddle and folk tunes in this collection is presented in more than one key, permitting teachers to introduce the all important concept of tonality early in their students' musical accuracy in terms of finding half-steps differences as the keys of change. Almost all the tunes are in first position. All the tunes have been harmonized with chord symbols. If teacher, parent, or friend can accompany these tunes on the guitar, piano autoharp, or other chord-playing instrument, the benefit to the student will be readily apparent.
