In Meeting God at the Boundaries: Cross-Cultural-Cross-Racial Clergy Appointments (2003), Lucia Ann McSpadden offered a penetrating analysis of the struggles as well as the joys and opportunities experienced by persons engaged in cross-cultural-cross-racial ministry in The United Methodist Church. Soon after the book was published, it became apparent that a volume was needed that would offer the various individuals and groups involved in this ministry hands-on, practical understanding, skills, and competencies for serving in cross-cultural-cross-racial ministry. Meeting God at the Boundaries: A Manual for Church Leaders fills that need. It provides succinct summaries of the basic concepts and competencies in cross-cultural-cross-racial understanding and communication. It then offers practical exercises and tools for equipping key leaders and groups involved in this ministry-clergy, their spouses and families, staff-parish relations committees, district superintendents and bishops-to carry out this ministry effectively and faithfully.

In 1980, SAGE published Geert Hofstede’s Culture’s Consequences. It opens with a quote from Blaise Pascal: “There are truths on this side of the Pyrenees that are falsehoods on the other.” The book became a classic—one of the most cited sources in theSocial Science Citation Index—and subsequently appeared in a second edition in 2001. This new SAGE Encyclopedia of Intercultural Competence picks up on themes explored in that book. Cultural competence refers to the set of attitudes, practices, and policies that enables a person or agency to work well with people from differing cultural groups. Other related terms include cultural sensitivity, transcultural skills, diversity competence, and multicultural expertise. What defines a culture? What barriers might block successful communication between individuals or agencies of differing cultures? How can those barriers be understood and navigated to enhance intercultural communication and understanding? These questions and more are explained within the pages of this new reference work. Key Features: 300 to 350 entries organized in A-to-Z fashion in two volumes Signed entries that conclude with Cross-References and Suggestions for Further Readings Thematic “Reader’s Guide” in the front matter grouping related entries by broad topic areas Chronology that provides a historical perspective of the development of cultural competence as a discrete field of study Resources appendix and a comprehensive Index The SAGE Encyclopedia of Intercultural Competence is an authoritative and rigorous source on intercultural competence and related issues, making it a must-have reference for all academic libraries.

The Guidelines’ booklets, one for each ministry area, are tools that enable you to help get new lay leaders off to a good start. Each booklet includes the basic "job description" for the leader as well as practical "how-to" information important to implementing ministry effectively. Brief and to the point for the busy, but spirit-led leader, these Guidelines take some of the unknown out of leading these ministry areas. One booklet for each title makes up this set of 26 Guidelines, perfect for making them available to all church members. The twenty-six Guidelines, one for each ministry area, cover church leadership areas including Church Council and Small Membership Church; the administrative areas of Finance and Trustees; and ministry areas focused on nurture, outreach, and witness including Worship, Evangelism, Stewardship, and Christian Education, age-level ministries, Communications, and more. The leader guide provides two kinds of information: (1) suggestions for weekly group sessions; (2) information to enhance leadership skills, to support group building and maintenance, and to make effective use of the CHRISTIAN BELIEVER components. A one-page session plan for each of the thirty weeks follows a set procedure with an amount of time indicated for each step. Each session plan provides guidance for group activities that make use of the daily preparation members have made, and questions for discussion. Group activities are designed to focus on content and help persons connect Scripture, doctrine, believing, and living. The leader guide assumes that: The leader makes the same preparation for the weekly group session as the other members of the group. Study and discussion in the weekly session is done mainly in small groups. The leader both guides the process and participates with other group members in the small-group study and discussion. The leader is not an information-giver or lecturer. The leader and the group members have access to the same content for study and discussion—the assigned Scripture, selections from the book of Readings, the study manual, and the video presentations. A study of CHRISTIAN BELIEVER can renew lives and congregations.
