Excerpt from A Trip to the Orient, the Story of a Mediterranean Cruise The story was intended specially for voyagers who have visited the same places, but it may be almost equally interesting to those who are planning a similar trip. And those who must stay at home may in these pages be able to look through another's eyes at the places described. If the book should in any slight way deepen the pleasant memories of those who have made the trip, or if it should give pleasure to those who must picture those scenes only in their imagination, the author will feel that his effort has not been in vain. Excerpt from A Cruise on the Mediterranean: Or Glimpses of the Old World Through the Eyes of a Business Man of the New To My Friend, Greeting: At the suggestion and earnest request of some of my friends, I have consented to the publication, in book form, of the letters that I wrote while on our Oriental trip. Through the kindness of my friend, Eugene J. Hall, these letters were published in the "Grocers' Criterion" during last winter and spring. My motive for writing these letters was that my family and intimate friends might, in a measure, enjoy some of the pleasures and benefits of a trip of great historic interest. To my son, Phelps, I am indebted for some of the results of his camera; to my good wife, for her encouragement and approval; to Poole Brothers, printers, for superior work in illustrations; to Eugene J. Hall for looking after the details and business features of the publication. As to my time and the expense of publication, my reward will be ample, should my friends accept this token of friendship and find in its perusal the pleasure that I could wish for. Excerpt from Summer Cruise in the Mediterranean: On Board an American Frigate Or one of the most delicious episodes in a long period of foreign travel, this volume is the imperfect and hastily written transcript. Even at the time it was written, the author felt its experience to be a dream - so exempt was it from the interrupting and qualifying drawbacks of happiness in common and working life - but, now, after an interval of many years, it seems indeed like a dream, and one so full of unmingled pleasure, that its telling almost wants the contrast of a sadness. Of the noble ship, whose summer cruise is described, and her kind and hospitable officers, the recollec tion is as fresh and grateful now, as when, (twenty years ago, ) the author bade them farewell in the port of Smyrna. Of the scenes he passed through, while their guest, he has a less perfect remembrance - relying indeed on these chance memoranda, for much that would else be forgotten. It is with a mingled sense of the real and the unreal, therefore, that the book is offered, in a new shape, to the Public. Excerpt from Our Cruise in the Mediterranean The wild ocean raved, the great foaming billows leaped and rolled and thundered headlong as they cast their white-crested heads far in the air, and our great Ship seemed almost swallowed up in the midst of the roaring waters that swept her decks as if She were but a toy in their play. The storm raged without the slightest abatement for two days, and during that time our regular, daily bill of fare was sadly interrupted, for we remained be low in various stages of wretchedness. The lighthouse on the Bermudas was sighted, which brought a gleam of joy to our forlorn party. We found a refuge in St. George's Bay, and the next morning went ashore into the town of St. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
