IN 2010, MEMBERS OF THE HAUDENOSAUNEE NATIONALS (formerly the Iroquois Nationals) lacrosse team, representing the Haudenosaunee Confederacy of six Indigenous Nations in North America, were sitting in a hotel in New York City instead of playing on the field in Manchester, England, competing for a world championship. The Nationals were told they couldn’t use their Haudenosaunee passports to travel to the UK; only Canadian or American passports would be accepted, effectively denying that this Confederacy had sovereignty and reinforcing the authority of the colonial powers. Media coverage of this pivotal event sparked the curiosity of longtime international lacrosse coach and player Travis Taylor. He wanted to learn more about the intersection of the sport and the traditional beliefs of the Indigenous people who originally developed the sport—or as they call it Tewa’á:raton. Originally written as Taylor’s PhD thesis, The Modern Medicine Game: Lacrosse, the Haudenosaunee, and Reconciliation postulates how lacrosse is a “modern medicine game,” and is a crucial element of reconciliation, decolonization, and resilience for the Haudenosaunee peoples. It explores what led the Haudenosaunee Nationals to assert their self-determination in 2010 by reaching back into time to understand the origins of the sport as a gift from the Creator, and its adoption and evolution by English-speaking people, most notably William George Beers.

MEDICINE GAME is a modern-day story set on the fictional Sparrow Lake Nation. It's a story of Tommy Henry's life on the Rez. Events from Tommy's childhood lead him down a path of violent outbursts that trouble him throughout his young life. The very same outbursts he saw from his father Beau. Tommy finds solace in the friendships he develops with his lacrosse teammates. He finds that the game of lacrosse is where he can go to let out the emotions, he has hidden deep inside him. Unfortunately, Tommy turns to heavy drinking and violence to help forget the issues he had hoped to leave in his past. Tommy's friends and his love for the game of lacrosse keep him balanced for most of his life, but a time comes when he is forced to deal with his past demons. Beau soon must help his son fight the same battle he faced as a young man. The people of the Sparrow Lake believe that the game of lacrosse was a gift given to them by the Creator. It was meant to be played with a good mind and strong heart. They believe that when they play the game the Creator smiles and blesses them with good health. That is why lacrosse is known to them as MEDICINE GAME. Embracing a good mind and strong heart, Tommy must come to terms with his childhood problems and find a way to heal before he hurts himself and those he loves. MEDICINE GAME is an emotional story that brings to light some of the dark issues in Native communities while displaying the comedy that many Native people use to cope with such issues. This is the story of one young man's healing journey.

Simulations are an integral part of medical education today. Many universities have simulation centers, so-called skills labs, where students and medical personal can practice diagnostics and procedures on life-like mannequins. Others offer simulation courses in the different sub-disciplines. In the pre-clinical phase, simulations are used to illustrate basic principles in physiology, anatomy, genetics, and biochemistry. For example, simulations can show how the metabolism of enzymes changes in the presence of inhibitors, illustrating drug actions. This book covers all areas of simulations in medicine, starting from the molecular level via tissues and organs to the whole body. At the beginning of each chapter, a biological phenomenon is described, such as cell communication, gene translation, or the action of anti-carcinogenic drugs on tumors. In the following, simulations that illustrate these phenomena are discussed in detail, with the focus on how to use and interpret these simulations. The book is complemented by topics such as serious games and distance medicine. The book is based on a course for medical students organized in the editor's department. Every year, around 300 international undergraduate medical students take the course.

Modern practical medicine requires high tech in diagnostics and therapy and in consequence in education. All disciplines use computers to handle large data bases allowing individual therapy, to interpret large data bases in form of neuronal signals, help visualization of organs during surgery. This book contains chapters on personalised therapy, advanced diagnostics in neurology, modern techniques like robotic surgery (da Vinci robots), 3D-printing and 3D-bioprinting, augmented reality applied in medical diagnostics and therapy. It is impossible without fast large scale data mining in both: clinical data interpretation as well as in hospital organization including hybrid surgery rooms and personal data flow. The book is based on a course for medical students organized in the editor's department. Every year, around 300 international undergraduate medical students take the course.

Since the debut of the Medicine Meets Virtual Reality (MMVR) conference in 1992, MMVR has served as a forum for researchers harnessing IT advances for the benefit of patient diagnosis and care, medical education and procedural training. At MMVR, virtual reality becomes a theatre for medicine, where multiple senses are engaged - sight, sound and touch - and language and image fuse. Precisely because this theatre is unreal, it is a valuable tool: the risks of experimentation and failure are gone, while the opportunity to understand remains. Improvement of this tool, through steady technological progress, is the purpose of MMVR. This book presents papers delivered at the MMVR18 / NextMed conference, held in Newport Beach, California, in February 2011, with contributions from international researchers whose work creates new devices and methods at the juncture of informatics and medicine. Subjects covered include simulation and learning, visualization and information-guided therapy, robotics and haptics, virtual reality and advanced ICT in Europe, validation of new surgical techniques, and many other applications of virtual-reality technology. As its name suggests, the NextMed conference looks forward to the expanding role that virtual reality can play in global healthcare. This overview of current technology will interest those who dedicate themselves to improving medicine through technology.
